Carroll hands O’Hara first field hockey loss

-

For those who thought the three-way tie atop the Catholic League field hockey standings two years ago between Cardinal O’Hara, Archbishop Carroll and Bonner & Prendergast was a fluke, well, you were wrong. It happened again. Archbishop Carroll blanked previously undefeated Cardinal O’Hara, 3-0, and Bonner & Prendergast rolled over Little Flower, 10-1, to create a threeway tie for first place between the Patriots, Lions and Pandas. All three finished league play at 8-1.

Since the teams beat one another, a coin flip will be used to determine the 1-2-3 seeds for next week’s Catholic League playoffs. The coin flip will take place Sunday night, Bonner & Prendie coach Joanne Dolan said.

Dolan’s daughter, Riley, had a career night in the final regular-season home game of her career. The AllDelco senior scored three goals and had a career-high five assists. She was involved in every goal except Kerry Keenan’s penalty stroke.

Molly McNulty also had a hat trick for the Pandas (113, 8-1). Keenan and fellow senior Erin Murphy scored the first goals of their careers.

Meanwhile, over at O’Hara, goalie Kimmy McGroary made 19 saves and Jess Hewitt had two goals as the Patriots snapped O’Hara’s 16-game winning streak. Katy Curry also scored, while Sam Swart and Meg Foster had assists.

In the Inter-Ac League: EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 3, PENN CHARTER 1 » Maddie Rehak and Katie Crager showed the way for the Churchwomen (10-4-1, 6-1).

Rehak scored twice, Crager handed out two assists and the Churchwomen tallied two goals in the second half to break a 1-1 deadlock at halftime. Kathleeen Anderson also scored for EA.

Boys Soccer

Quinn Dudek and goalies A.J. Marcucci and Matt Freese came up big as Episcopal Academy battled to a 1-1 draw in Inter-Ac League boys soccer action Friday. Dudek scored on a penalty kick in the second half and Marcucci and Freese made two saves each for the Churchmen (12-4-3, 4-1-1). Billy Coyle had the goal for the Friars. PENN CHARTER 2, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 0 » Bobby Stratts took over in goal after Will Baltrus was injured late in the game. They gave up one goal each and combined for four saves for the Fords (3-9-4, 0-5-1).

In nonleague action: STRATH HAVEN 2, KENNETT 1 » Harrison Hotham and Justin Snyder scored in the first half and that’s all the Panthers needed to close out the regular season with a victory. Will Huestis made 10 saves in goal.

Girls Soccer

Morgan Crain and Lizzie King did all the scoring as Strath Haven closed out the regular season with a 2-1 nonleague win over Villa Maria. Crain had two goals and King one for the Panthers (14-3-1).

In the Inter-Ac League: PENN CHARTER 2, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 0 » Kait Haughley and Gi DiMarco scored in the second half for the Quakers. Goalie Mackenzie Listman stopped eight shots to post the shutout. Morgan Messner made 10 saves in goal for the Churchwomen.
