Fran would save animals that she found abandoned; a rabbit that she nursed back to health pulling off his ticks and boiling grass to feed him with an eyedropper and a squirrel who she calls Roger. She put Roger in a birdcage, nursing him back to health and when he landed on Al’s head, Al felt he was strong enough to survive outside. Roger comes and knocks on their door and still goes into the cage on his own from time to time.

“I have a great husband. He never gets angry. I guess I keep him amused,” said Fran.

The two were featured on a TV spot for rescuing Sparkles, their dog, from Providence Animal Center in July.

At the ages 93 both keep of 92 and busy. He

does the laundry and she cooks. Every holiday she will cook dinner for 13 to 19 people. Their daughter Joy and granddaugh­ter Colleen visit her once a week, sitting down to a meal that Fran prepares.

“When everyone is sitting around the table I couldn’t be happier. It’s a lot of work and it’s a lot of love,” said Fran.

So what is their secret to 70 years of bliss? Al a man of few words compared to his bride, shared this advice.

“We share everything. We help each other out. We grew up during the Depression and we learned to accept things. There were hard times, but through it all we appreciate each other,” said Al.

Fran agreed adding, “First we take care of one another. My husband takes care of me and I take care of him. Sharing, caring and loving each other. We are always together. We have our difference­s. If it gets too heated, we

go into another room and think about what it is. A peck on the cheek means everything.”

Sitting next to his bride of 70 years, Al looked into her eyes and said “We’ll get to 75 years.”
