Bridge work in Lower Chi
LOWER CHICHESTER >> Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announces that Morton Street will be closed and detoured between Green and Market streets Monday, Feb. 27 through Friday, March 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for water main installation. Traffic will be detoured through the SEPTA parking lot.
The work is part of PennDOT’s $19.9 million project to replace the Route 452 bridge over Amtrak and SEPTA railroad tracks in Marcus Hook Borough and Lower Chichester Township, Delaware County.
PennDOT’s contractor will work over the next two and half years to replace the structurally-deficient, 17-span reinforced concrete T-beam bridge with a new four-span, continuous prestressed box beam bridge. The new bridge will be 343 feet long and 40 feet wide and will be built on a new alignment and widened to meet current design standards. Crews will also resurface and regrade new approaches to the bridge.
The bridge was built in 1925 and rehabilitated in 1995. It is 656 feet long and 32 feet wide. It carries an average of 8,700 vehicles a day.
Route 452 (Market Street) will remain open during construction except for two 28-day closures during later stages of construction. The project is scheduled to finish in September 2019.
Road-Con, Inc., of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $19,947,624 project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

Bridge work in Haverford
HAVERFORD >> PennDOT announces that lane restrictions are scheduled on College Avenue between Walton Lane and Haverford Road 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 through Friday, March 3, for drainage installation and line painting. Traffic will be controlled by flagging.
The work is part of PennDOT’s $5.2 million project to replace the structurally-deficient College Avenue bridge over SEPTA railroad tracks and the adjacent culvert over Cobbs Creek.
PennDOT’s contractor will work over the next year to replace the twospan concrete encased steel beam bridge with a one-span composite prestressed concrete box beam structure and construct a new precast reinforced concrete arch culvert. The project is scheduled to finish in November 2017.
The project also includes improvements to the traffic signals at the intersection of College Avenue and Haverford Road, and the addition of left turn lanes on College Avenue at this intersection.
The new structure over SEPTA tracks will be 42 feet wide and 58 feet long. It will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot left turn lane. It will also have a five-foot sidewalk on the west side of the structure and a two-foot shoulder on the east side.
The new concrete arch culvert will be 42 feet wide and 24 feet long. It will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot painted center gore area. It will also feature a five-foot sidewalk on the west side of the structure and a two-foot shoulder on the east side.
The existing two-span bridge over SEPTA was built in 1931. It is 42 feet wide and 63 feet long. The structure carries an average of 4,637 vehicles a day. The one-span concrete arch culvert over Cobbs Creek was built in 1924. It is 30 feet wide and 16 feet long.
