Swarthmore and Neumann finally dance on championsh­ip stage

The men’s basketball teams from Swarthmore College and Neumann University were looking to make a little history Saturday.

The Garnet were in search of their first Centennial Conference championsh­ip, while the Knights were looking to win the Colonial States Athletic Conference on their home floor for the first time.

Both teams their goals.

Cam Wiley scored 28 points as Swarthmore rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to beat Dickinson, 68-66, Saturday night at Tarble Pavilion.

Zack Yonda hit a 3-pointer with 4 minutes, 30 seconds left to put Swarthmore (22-5) up for good, 62-59. He finished with 13 points. Wiley buried a triple with 1:52 remaining to secure the first trip to the NCAA Division III tournament in program history.

Earlier in the day, Darian Barnes had no intention of his final CSAC Championsh­ip with Neumann ending in a loss.

The Penn Wood grad was utterly dominant, posting a tripledoub­le of 11 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks as the Knights cruised to a 77-51 victory over Gwynedd Mercy.

DeShawn Lowman scored a game-high 25 points, Carl Wallace posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards and Tony Parker tossed in 10 points for the Knights (25-2).

Both teams will learn their fate when the field is announced at 12:30 Monday afternoon. accomplish­ed

Women’s Basketball

Renee Oliver tossed in 18 points to go with 15 rebounds, but a poor shooting day doomed Cabrini to a 67-49 loss to Gwynedd Mercy in the CSAC Championsh­ip Saturday.

Meghan Matthews added 11 points off the bench for Cabrini (16-12). But the Cavs shot just 18for-69 (26.1 percent) from field and connected on just of 15 3-point attempts.

Nicole Dombrowski’s 13 points and 13 rebounds led a quintet of double-figure scorers for Gwynedd Mercy. TEMPLE 88, CINCINNATI 64 >> Tanaya Atkinson caught fire off the bench with 30 points and 13 rebounds as Temple mauled the Bearcats on senior day.

Feyonda Fitzgerald dished 11 assists to go with 18 points, and Alliya Butts tallied 23 points for Temple (22-6 overall, 12-3 AAC), which led 23-2 after one quarter and didn’t look back.

Cardinal O’Hara All-Delco Shanice Johnson led Cincinnati with 15 points. LA SALLE 73, ST. BONAVENTUR­E 70>> Jasmine Alston paired 11 points with 13 assists and seven rebounds as the Explorers led for the last 17 minutes of the game to book a place in the Atlantic 10 quarterfin­als.

Adreana Miller led La Salle (17-12) with 20 points, and Cardinal O’Hara grad Lisa Mintzer added 16 for the Explorers. SAINT JOSEPH’S 77, RHODE ISLAND 51>> The third-seeded Hawks had no problem with No. 14 URI thanks to 23 points from Adashia Franklyn, including an 11-for-13 day from the line.

Chelsea Woods contribute­d 17 bench points, and Alyssa Monaghan (Daily Times Player of the Year from Bonner & Prendergas­t) drained three 3-pointers to finish with 13 points for the Hawks (16-13), who advance to next Friday’s quarterfin­als of the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Richmond, Va. It’ll be an all-Big 5 matchup with the Hawks taking on sixth-seeded La Salle.
