Temple pulls away from Tulane in second overtime

PHILADELPH­IA >> Shizz Alston Jr. scored 11 of his 25 points in the second overtime, Mark Williams added 20 points and Temple pulled away from Tulane 86-76 on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak.

After Tulane’s Malik Morgan’s deep, buzzer-beating 3-pointer tied the game at 71, the Owls scored the first seven points in the second overtime. That included a 3-pointer from Alston, who then added eight free throw as Temple outscored the Green Wave 15-5.

Obi Enechionyi­a added 14 points and Daniel Dingle 13 for the Owls (15-15, 6-11 American), who led 3628 at halftime. In each of their previous three losses, the Owls had a lead at halftime.

Alston and Dingle both had eight rebounds, with Alston adding five assists and two steals.

Cameron Reynolds had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Green Wave (5-23, 2-14) and Morgan had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Tulane had a 7-0 run to go up by six with 3:44 left in regulation but Temple scored the last five points, tying it as Alston scoring from the lane with 9.5 seconds left after he corralled the rebound from his missed layup. ST. LOUIS 61, SAINT JOSEPH’S 60 >> Jalen Johnson scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Mike Crawford hit a key 3-pointer, and Saint Louis edged Saint Joseph’s with an unusual ending.

The Billikens were up 61-58 with five seconds left when Crawford missed a pair of free throws. The Hawks’ Jai Williams grabbed the rebound and passed to James Demery. Demery dribbled the floor and bypassed Brendan Casper, who was calling for the ball just outside the 3-point arc, and made a layup as time expired, sealing a one-point win for Saint Louis.

Crawford’s 3-pointer gave the Billikens a 59-58 lead with 1:15 to play. Johnson forced a turnover on Saint Joseph’s next possession, and Aaron Hines made a layup to stretch the lead to 61-58.

Saint Louis (10-19, 5-11 Atlantic 10) snapped a three-game losing skid.

Chris Clover scored 17 points to lead Saint Joseph’s (10-18, 3-13), which has lost eight straight. COLUMBIA 70, PENN 67 >> Mike Smith scored 20 points, including a key 3-pointer with a minute left, Luke Petrasek added 17 with a blocked shot as time ran out, and Columbia edged Penn in a critical Ivy League game.

The Lions (11-14) and Quakers (1213) are both 5-7 and tied for fourth in league play with a week to go. This is the first season the Ivy League has a postseason tournament with the top four teams qualifying.

Neither team led by double figures, their statistics were almost identical and there were 11 ties and 10 lead changes, although Columbia took the lead for good on a Nate Hickman’s free throws with 10:27 remaining during an 8-0 run.

Hickman gave Columbia a 6760 lead — the largest of the second half — on a 3-pointer with 5:37 to go. The Lions then went 4:11 without a basket, missing seven-straight shots. Ryan Betley’s free throws pulled the Quakers within 2 before Smith hit is trey at 1:04.

AJ Brodeur and Jackson had 16 each for Penn. CHARLESTON 80, DREXEL 67 >> Jarrell Brantley scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals, Joe Chealey added 16 with three steals, and the College of Charleston beat Drexel to win its fourth straight.

Cameron Johnson scored 14 for the Cougars (23-8, 14-4), who have a No. 2 seed and first-round bye secured at next week’s Colonial Athletic Associatio­n Tournament.

Chealey’s free throw put the Cougars up for good 11-10 en route to a 36-26 halftime lead. Brantley hit three straight free throws and the Cougars led by 18, 70-52, with 6:30 left to play in the second half and were never seriously threatened.

Kurk Lee scored 13 points for Drexel (9-22, 3-15), which has lost five straight. Donahue
