100 Years Ago – 1917:

One of the most popular men who visits Leipervill­e is Johnny Kilbane, the featherwei­ght boxer. When Kilbane is in Leipervill­e, he is the guest of that prince of good fellows, James F. Dougherty, proprietor of the Colonial Hotel. The coming of Kilbane is made much of and all the fans are present to give him a hearty welcome.

75 Years Ago – 1942: All the proceeds taken in by the management of the Ward Grille, Third and Ward streets, Chester, today and tonight will be donated to the “Buy-a-Bomber” fund. This patriotic gesture is expected to bring a considerab­le sum for the worth purpose of putting another plan in the skies for service against the Axis Powers. The Italian-American residents of Chester are proving that they stand solidly behind the “all-out plans” to defeat the Axis Powers by the way they have subscribed to the purchase of Defense Bonds. The city’s Sons of Italy branch pledged itself to the sale of $50,000.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

The Chester Republican organizati­on has endorsed Mayor James H. Gorbey in the May 16 primary election in his bid for a second term. City GOP Chairman Joseph Mielcarek said the party also has endorsed three incumbent councilmen, the city controller and treasurer for re-election. Mielcarek said the six candidates were the “unanimous choice” of the party’s 48-member city committee. The endorsed council candidates were Mielcarek, James Lamb, and John H. “Jack” Nacrelli. Nacrelli was appointed last year to fill the council vacancy created by the death of Garry E. Boden.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Things appear rosy for Ruby Tuesday’s, with Middletown council’s unanimous approval of a sketch plan for the new restaurant proposed for Grantie Run Mall. Approval paves the way for preliminar­y land developmen­t plans to be submitted to the township planning commission for reviews.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Penncrest High School students Lori Rice Spring and Kevin Nolen led Amnesty Internatio­nal’s effort to raise money for humanitari­an aid for Darfur as part of their school’s “Dollars to Darfur” campaign. To date, more than $2,000 in donations has come from students, parents, teachers and community members, with more coming in. Newtown officials are looking for residents interested in helping their community in the event of a disaster.
