100 Years Ago – 1917:

Moving picture shows have proved a failure as far as the Colonial Theatre, Leipervill­e, is concerned and the theatre has now been closed for a number of weeks. J. F. Dougherty, the owner, says with his theatre the movies have appeared to lose their drawing power.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Another arrest is imminent in the probe of the Chester abortion ring being conducted by the District Attorney’s office. Chief County Detective Fred Jack revealed that important informatio­n has been obtained by a Philadelph­ia woman being held without bail in that city on a charge of murder following an abortion. The probe started being the death of a 17-year-old Boothwyn girl in Chester Hospital from an illegal operation, which according to the police was performed by the Philadelph­ia woman currently being held.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Delaware State Police have charged a Talleyvill­e man in the shotgun slaying of an 18-year-old youth and the wounding of his wife and daughter Saturday night. Police in neighborin­g states have been alerted to be on the lookout for the accused slayer — a man with two artificial legs — who fled the scene in a green pickup truck. The 43-year-old, of Naamans Road, is armed and should be considered dangerous, police warned.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Four employees of a tank cleaning firm have been charged with stealing oil by the truck load from the BP refinery in Marcus Hook and the Chevron refinery in Philadelph­ia, police said. Although a three-month investigat­ion by the White Collar Crime Unit of the county Criminal Investigat­ions Division has documented only six thefts, CID Chief Michael Shull said the total take is believed to exceed two million gallons of fuel oil worth about $1,25 million over the past two years.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

An unidentifi­ed man was in police custody in connection with a string of strong-arm robberies in Concord, Aston and Upper Chichester after he crashed his car on I-95 in Tinicum. The man was traveling with a young child in the car when they crashed in the Essington section. Authoritie­s said the car involved in the accident matched the descriptio­n of a car used following a robbery in the parking lot of a Wawa store in Upper Chichester. A car with a similar descriptio­n was also seen fleeing the scene of robberies in Concord and Aston.
