Principals donate $30,000 to build playground in Upper Darby
UPPER DARBY >> Stonehurst Hills Elementary School will be the recipient of a $30,000 playground as a donation from a national educators group.
During their annual conference in Philadelphia this July, about 100 principals in town for the National Association of Elementary School Principals will spend the day at Stonehurst Hills to build an entirely new playground set for the school. The group will be working with Landscape Structures construction.
The announcement was made during the Upper Darby School Board’s finance and operations committee meeting on Feb. 28.
The playground will feature new equipment and is said to be accessible to all kids, including the handicapped. One swing set will be removed from the current playground equipment. District Manager of Operations Matt McKenzie said it will be a great place for the community by the end of the summer.
Stonehurst Hills was selected because it was deemed to be the school on the that would benefit most.
Logistical issues under consideration are preliminary architectural drawings for the site, certificates of insurance, district maintenance and transportation contributions and identifying more opportunities for service and volunteers.
“We’re very excited to have this opportunity, having a (donation) from the NAESP. We’re pleased and appreciative that we get to use this new equipment,” said Schools Superintendent Dan Nerelli.
The board will have to approve the donation and is scheduled to do so at the March 14 meeting.
