Whitfield’s double-double lifts Williamson in consolatio­n

All-American Kevin Whitfield closed out his Williamson career in fine fashion.

The Chester native scored 19 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and handed out three assists as the Mechanics rolled past NHTI in the consolatio­n round of the USCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament Friday.

Whitfield scored 12 of his points in the second half as Williamson (25-6) erased a 33-31 halftime deficit. Kyree Freeman backed Whitfield with 14 points and five assists. Jo’wan Livers added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Andre Merrell pitched in with nine boards and seven assists.

Penn-State Brandywine turned to the 3-pointer to close out the season on a winning note.

The Lions made 14 threes to down Penn State-Hazleton, 76-69, in the consolatio­n round of the USCAA Division II Tournament at Penn State-Lafayette.

With the victory the Lions (22-8) set the program record for wins in a season.

Senior Chelsea Dent (Penn Wood) capped her career with 13 points and five assists. Nikki Velez made five 3-point field goals to finish with a team-high 17 points. Chrissy Gledhill (Cardinal O’Hara) and Alyssa Abbonizio (Springfiel­d) had three 3-point field goals and 13 points apiece. SAINT JOSEPH’S 66, LA SALLE 48 >> Chelsea Woods had a torrid night from the field (6 for 9), scoring a game-high 21 points to power the Hawks to victory in the A-10 quarterfin­als at the Richmond Collesium. Saint Joe’s plays Duquesne in the semifinals Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Alyssa Monaghan, three-time AllDelco and 2015 Player of the Year from Bonner & Prendergas­t, added seven points, four assists and two steals for the Hawks (17-13). Mackenzie Rule (Cardinal O’Hara) had two points and three assists.

Amy Griffin paced with 18 points. PENN 60, DARTMOUTH 47 >> With the win, the Quakers earned at least a share of the Ivy League championsh­ip. Coach Mike McLaughlin became the program’s all-time wins leader with 129 victories. a the Explorers (17-13)
