100 Years Ago – 1917:

Reliable sources have leaked out the informatio­n that the appointmen­t of eight additional policemen will not stop the program of perfecting the police department. The next addition will be the installing of a modern “call” system which is effective in an hour of emergency when some type of crime has been perpetrate­d. The present police “call” system installed at the city hall is found to be a handicap to the department.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

For the second time in its brief career, the Chester Reporter was published under blackout conditions last night. The entire plant of the Star Publishing Company in Wilmington was darkened from 10 to 10:15 p.m. as the area staged a trial blackout. The Reporter is printed at the Star building. Defense officials in the Delaware city pronounced the test a decided success.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

After years of fighting, constructi­on the $100 million Midcounty Expressway (Blue Route), possibly one of the most controvers­ial highways ever built, formally began with a ground-breaking ceremony in Radnor. The 22-mile highway through Delaware and Montgomery counties was first proposed by the Delaware County Planning Commission in 1951.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

A 77-year-old Glenolden woman was seriously injured in a crash in Ridley Township between her car and a Ridley Emergency Medical Service ambulance which was responding to a report of a baby not breathing. The woman was admitted to the intensive care unit at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Both vehicles were traveling on MacDade Boulevard and were stopped for a traffic light at Milton Avenue when the ambulance was dispatched to the report of the baby in the Kinder Park housing project. As the ambulance driver attempted to pass the stopped vehicles, the woman tried to get her car out the way and turned in front of the ambulance. The ambulance struck the car on the driver’s said. The woman was trapped in her car until firefighte­rs removed the roof.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

The 7-Eleven store employee who was the latest victim in the series of 13 convenienc­e store robberies by two males tendered his resignatio­n, Upper Darby police said. The thoughts of having to stare down the barrel of pistol-grip shotgun was too much to bear for the 20-something clerk working the 7-Eleven at 631 Long Lane.
