Garnet Valley upsets Boyertown in AA opener

There are 20 teams in the Flyers Cup AA bracket. Garnet Valley got in as the nextto-last seed, but that did not stop the Jaguars from scoring the first upset of the tournament.

Matthew Wood scored a shorthande­d goal 6:03 into overtime to lift 19th-seeded Garnet Valley to a 7-6 victory over No. 14 Boyertown Monday night at Ice Line.

It was Wood’s third goal of the game and sent the Jaguars into Wednesday’s second round against thirdseede­d Downingtow­n East at Ice Line. Faceoff is 8:45.

Wood and Stuart Gannon also had an assist on Vincent Starzi’s tying goal with 2:47 left in the third period.

Starzi finished with two goals and three assists, while Gannon had one goal to go along with his assist and pace an offense that peppered Boyertown goalie Owen Yancey (55 saves) with 62 shots on goal. GV Goalie Stanley Wheeler stopped 43 of the 49 shots he faced.

In AAA action: ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 3, ARCHBISHOP WOOD 1 >> The seventh-seeded Patriots scored the final three goals, one in each period, to advance to the quarterfin­als against second-seeded Holy Ghost Prep Thursday night (7:20) at Grundy Arena in Bristol.

Ian Myers scored the final two goals for Carroll. He converted a pass from William Stenger 2:49 into the second period to break a 1-1 deadlock and then put home a pass from Harrison Lownes on the power play with 19 seconds left in a penalty-marred third period. The Patriots and Vikings were whistled for 11 penalties in the final period, which six going against Wood.

Matthew Strofe tallied the first goal for Carroll while Stenger finished with two assists.

In A action: LOWER DAUPHIN 7, STRATH HAVEN 4 >> Cade Helmer and Jeffrey Gross scored two goals each in the third period to lift the No. 14 Falcons past the No. 11 Panthers.

Lower Dauphin tallied three times in the last 2:08 as the Falcons twice in a four-goal outburst by the Falcons in the third period. Gross had both of his goals in that stretch including the winner off a feed from Helmer. Lower Dauphin takes on sixth-seeded Radnor in the second round Wednesday night at Ice Line (6:45).

Mike Irey paced Strath Haven with three goals and one assist. Blayden Reid added one goal and one assist.
