100 Years Ago – 1917:

Pleading guilty to the charge of selling cocaine, a Bethel Court man was held in $500 bail for the county court at a preliminar­y hearing before Police Magistrate Leary. Ernest Tindley, special officer, testified furnishing a woman $1.50 to purchase the “dope” and witnessed the sale. Upon hearing the evidence, the accused admitted his guilt.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Drowning American seamen are being used for target practice by Nazi submarine commanders. The was learned exclusivel­y today by the Chester Reporter after it was revealed that the only two known survivors of a Marcus Hook oil tanker torpedo in South American waters in February are at their homes. Still suffering from heir terrible ordeal, Charles Ottley Lynch of Media and Orla P. Bowhall of Chester are the only survivors of a crew of 25. While both men refused to talk for publicatio­n, a source close to one of the men reviled the Nazi crew killing men struggling in the water.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Chester’s fight to be named demonstrat­ion (model) city apparently won’t get any help from its congressma­n, U.S. Rep. G. Robert Watkins, R-9 of Birmingham. Watkins said that in Chester some 460 houses and small business places would be demolished under a model cities program. “Where will the people go?” Watkins asked. “This is getting the cart before the horse.”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

First, state Rep. Steve Friend, R-166 of Haverford, criticized U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter for not agreeing to a debate before the April 28 primary. Then, Specter agreed to face his challenger on March 30 in Altoona at a forum that will be televised statewide. Yesterday, Freind branded Specter a “coward” because he won’t agree to a second debate. Specter’s spokesman responded by calling Freind a hypocrite.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

An acquaintan­ce asked to solve a glitch on a 23-yearold Aldan man’s home computer noticed child porn and contacted police, initiating an investigat­ion and the man’s arrest. County Detective Michele Deery, a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, received a tip from the woman regarding sexually explicit photograph­s seen on the man’s computer. “The woman stated that he had asked her to look at his home computer because it wasn’t operating correctly,” Deery wrote, noting the tipster detected about five to 10 images/videos of alleged child porn.
