100 Years Ago – 1917:

Four residents of Chester’s Bethel Court district escaped punishment for selling liquor without a license and selling cocaine by being acquitted by a jury. However, the jury put the cost of prosecutio­n on the defendants. In the event of war with Germany, the United States not only can make all the munitions it needs for its own use, but have enough left over to supply the Allies if every factory closed down In England, France, Russia, Italy and the other nations embroiled in the struggle. Pennsylvan­ia alone can furnish enough munitions to carry the country through the present crisis.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

The effort to clean up conditions in Chester has started, and two alleged street walkers were arrested over the weekend as police maintained a close watch over vice areas. Chief of Police George J. Sweeney doubled the number of police usually on duty in the Bethel Court district on Saturday night. Prostitute­s who ply their trade in taprooms were conspicuou­s by their absence as word was passed around that “the heat is on.” Many of the women have left the city, it is reported.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Christians throughout Delaware County and the world will observe the most sorrowful day in their church calendar on Friday. It’s Good Friday, commemorat­ing the crucifixio­n of Christ.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

The sixth annual conference of Students Against Drunk Driving, sponsored by the Penncrest High SADD Chapter, will take place at Neumann College Life Center. Among the presenters are programs are Bryn Mawr Rehabilita­tion Center with its Cruisin’ Not Boozin’ program. The idea was to clean up graffiti, but a youth group in southweste­rn France got carried away and wiped out a bit of prehistory as well, damaging 15,000-year-old cave paintings of bison.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

The cleanup continued on water damage to basements of homes on Edgar and Vinsmith avenues in Aston caused by sewer line backups precipitat­ed by a water main break early in the week. George Crum, director of the Southwest Delaware County Municipal Authority, acknowledg­ed that where the sewer line break occurred, because of the water main break above it, “is the oldest part of our collection system, but it still doesn’t make it any more prone to these types of occurrence­s.”
