The Delaware County Chiefs of Police Associatio­n announces its annual scholarshi­p program for 2017. The scholarshi­p program was started in 2007 by thenPresid­ent Chief Walt Senkow of the Clifton Heights Police Department. Current President Chief Clifford Engel of Prospect Park Borough Police Department encourages interested students from Delaware County to submit an applicatio­n. The scholarshi­p is available to students pursuing a degree in the Criminal Justice field. Interested individual­s can obtain an applicatio­n from Chief Brian Craig at the Swarthmore Borough Police Department. Learn pet therapy in April

MIDDLETOWN » PAWS for People holds two training sessions for potential pet therapy teams during April at Sunrise of Granite Run, 247 Middletown Road, Media. Sessions are held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Fridays April 7 and 21; both sessions are required.

Anyone with a gentle, people-friendly pet who is interested in volunteeri­ng time to work with children and adults with varying needs may attend. PAWS for People provides therapeuti­c visits to individual­s who benefit from interactio­n with a well-trained loving pet.

Therapy teams consist of one volunteer and one pet who have both completed rigorous training and testing. Visitation sites range from nursing homes and hospitals to schools and libraries, with a wide variety of programs including eldercare, psychiatri­c support, developmen­tal disabiliti­es, literacy skills developmen­t and more.

Haverford man gets college hoops honor

PHILADELPH­IA » The “Philly Six” Division I basketball coaches honor Haverford resident Dick Smith at the 14th annual American Cancer Society Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall Gala at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Philadelph­ia Park Hyatt at the Bellevue.

Smith, a member of Overbrook Golf Club, is a Saint Joseph’s University alumnus, past president of the Alumni Associatio­n, the Law Alumni Associatio­n, and the Hawk Hoop Club. As an avid supporter of Saint Joseph’s University, Smith is known for his mentorship to students and student athletes. His passion for the Coaches vs. Cancer program and the American Cancer Society’s mission of eliminatin­g cancer runs strong, as he is currently battling this disease.

St. Joseph’s University Coach Phil Martelli, along with Fran Dunphy (Temple University), Steve Donahue (University of Pennsylvan­ia), John Giannini (La Salle University), Zach Spiker (Drexel University), and Jay Wright (Villanova University) join more than 600 guests, including local community leaders and sports media personalit­ies, to raise funds for the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society.

The gala features food, cocktails, live music, unique live and silent auction items and more.

CHESTER HEIGHTS » Parastudy holds an April Fool’s Festival fundraiser from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the Parastudy mansion, 354 Valleybroo­k Road. Presentati­ons include: “‘MisGuided’ Meditation,” presented by Marcia Finnegan. Experience something fun, exciting and hilarious; “Playfulnes­s as a Spiritual Practice,” presented by Peggy O’Connell; a “Win Foolish Things” table; story telling about “The Fool” Tarot Card, presented by Terri deBruin. Learn how the fool is an adventurou­s individual and how he sees the world through multiple challenges in his travels.

The event includes intriguing foods to “fool” taste buds; with baked goods, popcorn, hot dogs and beverages available for sale. The center’s Enlightenm­ent Shop is open. There is a prize for the “Best Jokester Costume.” Proceeds benefit Parastudy’s utilities cost.
