100 Years Ago – 1917: Posterette­s for the advertisem­ent and promotion of the material interests of Chester and vicinity have been printed and will be distribute­d by the Chester Times beginning Friday. There are 20 different designs, small in size, and prettily colored, depicting scenes and industries in the city and vicinity. These posterette­s are to be affixed to letters and other mail matter, express packages or anything to be shipped out of Chester.

75 Years Ago – 1942: Roy Hultzapple, local business man, has purchased the Merchant Trust Co. Building, which occupies the entire block at Eighth and

Welsh streets, Chester, from the Delaware County National Bank. Purchase price was not disclosed. It is a three-story brick structure with modern stores on the street floor and general offices the second and third floors.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Visitors to the Chester Centennial Exposition at Sun Center this week need follow only two instructio­ns to find Miss Chester Hospitalit­y. First, look for a tall, attractive, brownhaire­d young woman with sparkling green eyes. Secondly, listen for a voice boosting the city of Chester. For in choosing 20-year-old Terry A. Burkett as the official centennial hostess, the Miss Hospitalit­y contest judges selected a girl who has definite opinions on what Chester is — and is not. “I like Chester, I suppose I love the city,” said Miss Burkett. “Sure, Chester has problems like any other city. But the big thing is we are trying to solve them.”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Aldan Borough Council is expected to vote a special meeting on ordinance changes necessary to pave the way for a proposed Providence Village Plaza Shopping Center on Oak Avenue at Providence Road. The proposed $7.2 million project calls for the demolition of the Internatio­nal Paper Co. plant

and the developmen­t of an 85,000 square-foot strip shopping center.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Bethany Baptist Church and the Delaware County Chapter Millions More Movement will host an “Emergency Town Meeting” for Chester at the church this week. The topic will be “Drugs and Violence are Destroying Our Youth — How Do We Stop It?” Speakers include Dr. Lonise Bias, mother of the late Len Bias, Tyrell Baker, who plays “Lil Kevin” on the HBO series, “The Wire,” and Charles Walden, star of BET’s “Comic View.”
