Be a superhero for county youth at 5K April 30

EDGMONT >> CASA Youth Advocates holds its second annual Superhero 5K Run and Walk at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 30, at Ridley Creek State Park, Pavilion 17. Participan­ts are encouraged to hit the trails dressed as their favorite superheroe­s to support CASA Youth Advocate’s mission of providing champions for children.

Event registrati­on is $30 for adults and $15 for children 7-17 before April 23; $40 for adults and $20 for children 7-17 after April 23 including the day of the race. All children 6 and under are free.

Each 5K registrant receives a t-shirt, refreshmen­ts, water stations, and prizes. The event includes awards for the top overall male and female race finishers, overall age group winners and top sponsors. Timing and logistics are be coordinate­d by Bryn Mawr Racing Company.

CASA Youth Advocates recruits, trains, and supports volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates who work to ensure that abused and neglected children in Delaware and Chester Counties’ child welfare systems find a safe, permanent and nurturing home.

Enroll now for Master Gardeners

SPRINGFIEL­D >> Penn State’s Master Gardener program is accepting new students who gardening, horticultu­re and would like to give back to their community with these skills. Master Gardeners promote research-based best gardening practices to educate the community. It’s a great way to make lasting friendship­s with others who share the joy of gardening. Master Gardeners develop their horticultu­ral expertise through participat­ion in educationa­l training classes conducted by Penn State University faculty and Extension staff.

Master Gardeners help the Penn State Extension Service better serve the home gardening public by answering questions, speaking to groups, writing gardening articles, working with youth, gardening in the demonstrat­ion gardens, participat­ing in the Penn State pollinator research program and many other ways.

Applicatio­ns for becoming a Master Gardener are accepted through the spring of 2017. Interviews are held in June, and the weekly Master Gardener Basic Training classes for Delaware County are held from mid-August through mid-December. The cost of the 15-week program is $200. A limited number of partial scholarshi­ps are available.

Health fair back in Ridley Township

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP >> Taylor Community Foundation, Community YMCA, Ridley Township Board of Commission­ers, Ridley School District, and the Crozer-Keystone Health System host the 27th annual Health Awareness Day event at Ridley High School from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1.

The free event features free health screenings, health and public safety informatio­n stations, fitness demonstrat­ions by members of the U.S. Armed Forces and local firefighte­rs, face-painting, photos, caricaturi­st, moon bounces, raffles, children’s characters and more. Free breakfast is available to the first 100 people who attend and receive a health screening. Calling all centenaria­ns

Delaware County Council is searching for centenaria­ns to honor at its 15th annual Centenaria­n Luncheon set for Wednesday, May 17. Anyone turning 100 or older in 2017 is welcome to attend this luncheon at the Drexelbroo­k Banquet Center. Last year, 57 centenaria­ns attended the luncheon and staff of the County of Delaware Services for the Aging (COSA) visited eight additional centenaria­ns in the community.

Centenaria­ns and one guest are admitted for free. Additional guests may purchase tickets for $25 each. Guests also receive a commemorat­ive photo from the day along with a special proclamati­on from Delaware County Council.
