Concept of legacy of service continues

- By David I. Chen District Manager Administration Upper Darby, Pennsylvania

It was 49 years ago that the original Upper Darby Social Security Office opened its doors to the public.

The first location was 6801 Ludlow Street on October 1968. Then came moves to 67 Long Lane and 1570 Garrett Road. In March 2010 we relocated to our current location at 8645 West Chester Pike.

I have been the District Manager here for three years, and although there have been changes in location and personnel, the one constant remains the commitment of the Upper Darby Office staff members to provide the best possible service to the community it serves, continuing an agency legacy that began here over four decades ago.

Social Security, of course, has had a major social and economic impact in the eastern Delaware County communities that our office services. Havertown, Lansdowne, Yeadon and Upper Darby are just a few of the localities in our jurisdiction. Overall, more than 30,000 people in our geographic area receive benefits; 66 percent are retired workers and their family members, 22 percent are disabled workers and their families and 12 percent are surviving family members of deceased workers. These payments total over $38 million per month!

The concept of a legacy continues. We know that an increasing number of people want to go online to handle their Social Security matters. By creating your online my Social Security account, you can view your earnings statement, replace your Medicare card, request a 1099 tax form, and much more. In certain cases, you can even request a Social Security Replacement Card at ssa.gov/myaccount/.

In addition, you can go to www.socialsecurity. gov to file for retirement, spouse’s, disability or Medicare benefits online.

We also provide an additional service — the “Self-Help Computer.” If you come in to the office to complete your application and want to do it yourself, you can use a computer set aside exclusively for you. And, if you need, we provide assistance. In any case, check out our website; I think you will like it.

Now that our first 49 years is in the books, we look forward to providing you prompt and courteous service in the next 49 years — and beyond!
