Bertone walks it off for Garnet Valley in 8th

-

Dominic Bertone capped a 3-for-4 day at the dish by delivering the walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting Garnet Valley to a 1-0 Central League decision over Upper Darby Monday afternoon.

Bertone drove in Matt Burba with a hit that sailed over the head of Upper Darby’s centerfielder.

The rest of the story about the pitching.

Matt Lupoli was outstanding for GV (2-0). Lupoli struck out nine and allowed only two hits — both singles — and one walk over six shutout frames. Will Wesolowski and Jeff Busch each pitched an inning of spotless ball.

Upper Darby received four solid innings of two-hit ball from Kyle Kessler. With the bats, Scott Devlin went 2-for-3 with a walk.

Ryan Meyer banged out a pair of singles for Ridley.

On the hill, Charlie Connolly tossed six strong innings with eight strikeouts for the Raiders. All-Delco Cameron Mathes (five innings, seven Ks) was impressive for the Tigers.

Mark Jordan, in the first season of his second stint at Marple Newtown, coached Radnor to the District 1 Class 3A title last spring.

In nonleague action: HAVERFORD SCHOOL 5, GRAYSLAKE NORTH (ILL.) 2 >> David Hogarth was hard to figure out at the dish. The twohole hitter was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, guiding the Fords to their first victory at a showcase in Orlando.
