100 Years Ago – 1917:

Twenty-five kits have been sent to the sailors who are doing coast duty from the Emergency Aid of Media and Media Branch of the Navy. The kits are fitted up with articles that will be useful to the men. They contain pen knives, cotton, scissors, darning cotton, tooth brush, tooth powder, lead pencils, writing pads, pins and safety pins.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

More than 200 persons gathered at the Ukrainian Hall as Ukrainian organizati­ons of Chester held a farewell dinner for Patrolman Michael Bartish, who left today for induction into the U.S. Army. Bartish, president of the American-Ukrainian National Home at Fourth and Ward streets, was presented with two $100 Defense Bonds by Postmaster Isaac A. Hiorth on behalf of the Ukrainian people of Chester.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Pennsylvan­ia State University is seeking to lease the Garrett Williamson Lodge, a large three-story stone building in Newtown, as a temporary facility for its Delaware County extension campus, it was learned today. Use of the graystone building for the start of the extension program hinges on the approval of a zoning change by the Newtown Zoning Board of Adjustment. The building is on 236 acres on Bishop Hollow Road, about one mile south of Newtown Square.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

State Rep. Steve Friend, R-166 of Haverford, apologized for the brawl that erupted after his debate with U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter last week, but continued to accuse his primary opponent of political expediency. Blows were exchanged between Freind’s driver and Specter’s press secretary after Freind and his supporters tried to force their way into a post-debate press briefing by Specter. With the apology, Freind still attacked his opponent as having a “single-minded approach to base his every action on what is in the best political interest of Arlen Specter.”

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Chadds Ford supervisor­s unanimousl­y approved a joint road program with neighborin­g Concord for an estimated savings of $35,000. Supervisor­s announced that the township received a $40,000 grant from the Delaware County Department of Economic Developmen­t through state Sen. Dominic Pileggi’s office to use for acoustical work in their town hall, Turner’s Mill. During bigger meetings, attendees have complained about the sound in the large meeting room and their inability to hear.
