Jazz legend performs at Ridley HS April 17

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP >> World renowned saxophonis­t David Liebman is featured in an “Evening of Jazz” at 7 p.m. April 17 in the Ridley High School auditorium, along with student jazz ensembles from the district high school, middle school and elementary schools. The progam is

presented by the Ridley School District’s Music Department, sponsored in part by Zezwitz Music.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased at the high school the night of the concert.

Liebman is considered by many to be a renaissanc­e man in contempora­ry music with a career stretching nearly 50 years. He has played with masters

including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and McCoy Tyner. He has written books and appeared in instructio­nal DVDs. His

style ranges from classical to rock to free jazz. A multiple Grammy nominee, Liebman received the French Order of Arts and Letters, and an honorary

doctorate from Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. He is the founder and artistic director of the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Schools of Jazz.

Downbeat Magazine said Liebman “is among the most important saxophonis­ts in contempora­ry music...”

Student jazz ensembles from Ridley schools will attend clinics with Liebman during the school day. At 7 p.m., they will perform a concert with

Liebman as a featured soloist with each of the groups.

“As the father of a daughter with a disability, I am keenly aware of the value of this program,” said Charlton. “The PA ABLE program will allow for the opportunit­y to save for future needs and special medical and adaptive goods and technologi­es, without impacting their needs-based benefits.”

PA ABLE savings account benefits include the ability to: Save up to $14,000 each year; have savings grow taxfree; use the account to pay for a wide range of disability-related expenses; make withdrawal­s exempt from federal and state income tax when used for qualified disability expenses; have accounts exempt from inheritanc­e tax; have ABLE savings excluded from eligibilit­y determinat­ions for Supplement­al Security Income benefits (savings up to $100,000), other meansteste­d federal programs, Medical Assistance, and other state means-tested disability and health benefits.

“This program gives families options which helps to ensure the financial security of their loved ones with disabiliti­es,” said Charlton. “I hope and highly recommend that people take advantage of this program.”

Earth Day for all ages in Haverford

HAVERFORD >> Haverford Township holds an Earth Day celebratio­n from 9 a.m.noon April 22 with free, fun-filled indoor and outdoor activities for children and adults at the Community Recreation and Environmen­tal Center, 9000 Parkview Drive, Haverford.

The program includes live music, family-friendly “animal tracking” guided trail walks, story time, a nature scavenger hunt, and nature crafts and activities for children. Riverbend Environmen­tal Center’s “On the Road” program has touchable artifacts and a live animal. Greener Partners’ Farm Explorer mobile farm gives hands-on lessons about plants, local agricultur­e, seasonal eating, and nutrition. Free seedlings and snacks, while they last. Also featured are exhibits on composting, beekeeping, rain gardens for home storm water management, watershed protection, how to buy green power, recycling and more.

An Electric and PlugIn Hybrid Vehicle Expo includes a test ride and donate event by Pacifico Ford Lincoln Mercury. For every test ride one of their green vehicles, Pacifico donates $20 to the Hav-a-Rain Garden Program to support building rain gardens in our community and help solve flooding and water quality problems in our streams. In addition, a Tesla S, BMW I3 and a Zero Electric Motorcycle are available for viewing. Owners answer questions about their EV experience.

‘Pete the Cat’ comes to UD

UPPER DARBY >> America’s largest and most prolific profession­al not-for-profit touring theatre company for young and family audiences, Theatrewor­ks USA, performs “Pete the Cat” a new musical based on the beloved book series by Kimberly and James Dean. at 7:30 p.m. April 21 at Upper Darby Performing ARts Center, 601 N. Lansdowne Ave., Drexel Hill.

The show is approximat­ely one hour and ideal for children ages 4 and up and their families. When Pete the Cat gets caught rocking out after bedtime, the cat-catcher sends him to live with the Biddle family to learn his manners - and boy are they square! But for the groovy blue cat, life is an adventure no matter where you wind up, so the minute Pete walks in the door, he gets the whole family rocking. The whole family that is, except for young Jimmy Biddle, the most organized second grader on planet earth. As the end of second grade approaches, Jimmy has a lot of tests, and the last thing he needs is some groovy cat in his life, changing his family and turning everything upside down. But when Jimmy draws a blank in art class during the last week of school, it turns out Pete is the perfect friend to help him out. Together, they set out on a mission to help Jimmy conquer second grade art, and along the way, they both learn a little something new about inspiratio­n. Join Jimmy and Pete on an adventure of friendship, all the way to Paris and back in a VW Bus.
