Chichester’s Hagel takes Del Val singles crown

Joey Hagel is the class Val League boys tennis.

The top seed in the league’s singles tournament from Chichester, Hagel didn’t lose more than three games in a set in his first two matches and won the title by injury walkover Wednesday to secure a spot in the District 1 Class 3A singles tournament.

Kevin Tran, the No. 2 seed out of Academy Park, made it to the final without dropping a set before bowing out with an injury. He also locked up a spot in the district tournament, which takes place next Friday at the Springfiel­d Healthplex.

Cliff Paasewe of Chichester was the darling of the tournament, winning his first two matches in straight sets as an unranked player before bowing out to Tran in the semifinals. He took out the tournament’s fifth and third seeds, respective­ly.

In nonleague action: HAVERFORD SCHOOL 5, HADDONFIEL­D (NJ) 0 >> John Walsh and Connor Lees made it through unblemishe­d at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respective­ly, and the tandem of Julius Golz and Emilio Fink won, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to highlight the of Del Fords’ blanking of State opponents.

In the Ches-Mont League: BISHOP SHANAHAN 7, SUN VALLEY 0>> The tandem of Tim Blajda and Matt Ziegler led the Eagles’ whitewashi­ng with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

In nonleague action: RADNOR 5, CENTRAL 2 >> Pat Farren and Robert Friggerio, Ethan Lee and Carlton Markowitz, George Hu and Max Xie and Ryan Susanin and Dylan Freedman swept the doubles in straight sets to lift the Raiders over the Lancers.

The Academy of Notre Dame is the Rooney Cup champion for the third year in a row.

Claire Nappi showed why defending national champion North Carolina wanted her so badly. The future Tar Heel did it all in the Irish’s 13-8 win over rival Merion Mercy, scoring six times to go with an assist, seven ground balls, five draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Makenzie Irvine snapped home a hat trick and added an assist for Notre Dame, which also got two goals, an assist and three ground balls from Claire Gola.

In other nonleague action: BONNER & PRENDERGAS­T 20, PENN WOOD 2 >> Paige Brady scored four times, Lindsey Fagan fired home a hat trick and Riley Dolan, Kirsten Doogan and Daly Ewing all tallied twice as the Pandas cruised past the Patriots.

In the League: GWYNEDD MERCY 17, SACRED HEART 2 >> Danielle Santora supplied all of the Lions’ offense with a pair of goals.

Make room for Isabelle Ha in the Garnet Valley record book.

Ha broke a 37-year-old school record that stood since 1980 by jumping five feet and two inches in the long jump as the Jaguars rolled past Harriton, 120-29, and Lower Merion, 82-68, before falling to Strath Haven, 111-39, in a Central League quad meet. Strath Haven cruised to its 73rd straight win by beating Lower Merion, 115-35, and Harriton, 137-13. The Aces mauled the Rams, 116-29.

Panther teammates Grace Forbes and Isabella Cardi tied for the 1,600 with a time of 5 minutes, 21.52 seconds, while Forbes also won the 800 and helped the Panthers to a 4 x 400 win, along with her sister, senior Maddie Forbes. The elder Forbes won the 400 and anchored the 4 x 800. KATCAVAGE POWERS HAVERFORD >> Cecilia Katcavage led the charge for Haverford by throwing the shot 37 feet, 1½ inches, and launching the discus 77 feet as the Fords handled Upper Darby (83-63), Penncrest (84-66) and Marple Newtown (111-35).

Penncrest’s Samantha Miller dusted the competitio­n in the 300 hurdles, 1,600 and 400 as the Lions downed the Royals (85-64) and Tigers (113-34). Michelle Brown-Jones kickstarte­d Upper Darby’s effort with wins in the 100 and 200 as Upper Darby rolled over Marple Newtown, 113-34.

Boys Track

Braheem Bishop was a on a mission for Chester.

Bishop won the 100-meter dash in 11.1 seconds and claimed the 200 in 23.0 to help the Clippers to wins of 84-48 and 102-25 over Chichester and Academy Park, respective­ly. The Eagles rolled over the Knights,

man 104-27, at the Del Val tri-meet.

Bishop and his teammates won the 4 x 100 with a time of 44.5. Chichester’s Brion McNear claimed the 400 in a time of 41.25, while Corey Simmons bested the field in the shot put with a heave of 37 feet, 10 inches.

In the Central League: RADNOR ROLLS TO THREE EASY WINS >> Peter Cooke was the star of the show in Radnor’s quad meet sweep, claiming wins in the 300 hurdles and 800 and also anchoring the 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays as the Raiders beat Ridley (92-58), Springfiel­d (116-34) and Conestoga (119-31). Ridley downed the Pioneers (113-36) and Springfiel­d (10742), while Conestoga handled the Panthers (66-55).

Alex Escobar played a mean second fiddle to Cooke with wins in the 100 and long jump, while Ridley’s Zack Forney paced the Green Raiders with triumphs in the 1,600 and 3,200.

In the Inter-Ac League: HAVERFORD SCHOOL 71, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 51 >> Elias Lindgren won the 1,600, Jermaine Rhoden was tops in the high jump and Sam Stickley claimed the pole vault for the Churchmen.
