100 Years Ago – 1917:

Mayor W.S. McDowell received word from W.W. Roper, chairman of the recruiting station committee of the Philadelph­ia Home Defense League, stating that a regularly equipped government recruiting party will arrive in Chester and stop at the Alpha Boat Club and West End Boat Club wharves for the purpose of enrolling men for defense work.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Negotiatio­ns towards settling the five-and-a-halfmonth-old strike against the Chester Times will be resumed April 29 in Washington before a panel of the U.S. Conciliati­on Service. Invitation­s to negotiate before the panel have been sent to Charles R. Long, publisher of the Times, and the Chester unit of the American Newspaper Guild, CIO, whose members are on strike. The Guild has accepted the invitation to resume negotiatio­ns. At issue are wages, hours and working conditions.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A “rare” jeweled Tiffany Glass perfume bottle worth $2,500 … bought in Paris … stolen from a New York exhibit … allegedly turning up in an Upper Darby gallery. These were the major ingredient­s in a civil action which unfolded before Judge Henry G. Sweney. But the key question in this mystery was simply: “Was the bottle that was stolen in the New York exhibit the same bottle that ended up in the hands of the Upper Darby gallery manager?”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

An angry Concord resident is claiming that the state’s Concord Road restoratio­n project may overflow her pond, but PennDOT says it is within its right to divert storm water from a state road to private property. Arthur and Marcia Laver, who live on Mattson Road just east of Concord Road, say that PennDOT has redirected storm water from Concord Road to township-owned Mattson Road before it reaches their property, and threatens to overflow the banks of their pond.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

If you like old cars, fast cars, fancy cars, or cars that make a statement, the newly-created Delco Cruisers Car Club is offering your kind of leisure time. Car enthusiast Carl Nathans founded the Delco Cruisers Car Club in January, after a lifetime of involvemen­t with many different makes and models of cars. Nathans is not alone in his automotive fascinatio­n, as he discovered when over 100 people showed up at January’s inaugural DCCC meeting at the Riddle Ale House, where it was standing-room-only.
