Carroll works OT to take battle of Delco’s finest

Extra innings were required when the top two baseball teams in Delaware County met Saturday afternoon in a nonleague game.

Archbishop Carroll, the No. 1 team in last week’s

Super 7, scored four runs in the top of the eighth to beat No. 2 Marple Newtown, 6-2.

Kevin Downs’ single knocked in Rich Melito with the game-winning run. Downs later scored on an RBI triple by Drew Butera.

Ian Myers entered in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and none out. Myers promptly retired all three batters he faced for the save. Jack Houser, who worked an inning-plus, picked up the win.

Downs, Butera and Cole Chesnet each had two hits for the Patriots (7-3).

Cameron Mathes smacked two doubles for the Tigers (4-3).

In other nonleague games: BISHOP EUSTACE (NJ) 8, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 4 >> The Churchmen fell despite pelting Eustace pitching for 10 hits, while EA’s hurlers allowed only three hits and three walks on the afternoon.

Cam Van went 3-for-3 Hoorebeke with a double, a walk for EA. BONNER & PRENDERGAS­T 14, READING 2 >> Tim Dougherty drove in five runs on two hits, including a double, and Kevin Zimmerman went 3-for-4 with a double as the Friars (3-7) routed the Knights. FATHER JUDGE 5, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 2 >> Bryan Hyland continued his hot hitting for the Fords, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer and a double. Tommy Toal doubled and scored a run. and

It was a showdown of Lower Merion Aces Saturday at the Healthplex as Matt Robinson downed teammate Matt Chen, 6-1, 6-3, to claim the Central League singles championsh­ip.

Clay Gaieski of Strath Haven and Radnor’s Max Safanov advanced to the semifinals. Safanov defeated Gaieski 6-3, 6-2 in the third-place final.

Upper Darby’s Brandon Caban took fifth place with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Harriton’s Isaac Goldenberg.

Boys Lacrosse

Jeffrey Conner registered three goals and three assists to lead Strath Haven past Downingtow­n East, 11-6.

Will Huestis added a hat trick and two assists, while Liam Carney and Ibo Pio each netted a pair of tallies. Will Brake stopped 14 shots in net for the Panthers, who led at halftime, 7-1.

In other nonleague HENDERSON 10, HAVERFORD 2>> Jack Daly and Luke McCallion accounted for the Fords’ goals.

Girls Lacrosse

action:

Logan O’Donnell posted three goals and an assist to help Penncrest earn an 11-8 win over Avon Grove.

Kenna Kaut and Grace Harding contribute­d two goals apiece for the Lions. Corryn Gamber made 14 saves between the pipes.

In other nonleague action: BONNER & PRENDERGAS­T 15, MARPLE NEWTOWN 13 >> Paige Brady (three assists) and Keeley Weis (two assists) powered the Pandas with four goals apiece. Riley Dolan tossed in a hat trick and won nine draw controls. UNIONVILLE 8, RADNOR 7 >> Julianne Puckette and Ellie Mueller paced the Raiders with two goals and an assist each. Cate Cox and Allison Lanzone both chipped in with a goal and an assist.
