100 Years Ago – 1917:

Angered when he was proffered a small sum, a Camden, N.J., man last evening fatally shot and wounded the Rev. Joseph M.T. Childrey, of Haddonfiel­d, N.J., former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Chester. Dr. Childrey lingered until 3:15 o’clock this morning, when death relieved his agony. His murderer is still at large.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Florence MacLean and George Hayes of the Reporter asked downtown pedestrian­s, “Who is your favorite actress and why?” Ted Williams of Scranton: “I like all of the actresses, but I enjoy seeing Gloria Jean most because I am her uncle. I have to admit, though, that she is very good;” Raymond Burgess of Pennell Street: “Olivia DeHavillan­d is my favorite, but it’s hard to say just why. She seems so well versed in portraying different and difficult roles;” L.H. Graus of 10th and Potter streets: “I seem to lean a little toward Bette Davis because I think she is the best actress at the present time. I don’t think I stand alone in that assumption. She doesn’t depend on her looks for success.” 50 Years Ago – 1967: Swarthmore College has been recognized for superior performanc­e in annual fundraisin­g by the American Alumni Council.

The college received an honorable mention award in the category of sustained performanc­e and will receive a certificat­e and a cash grant of $225 at the council’s annual meeting in San Francisco In July.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

After a three-year closure for its restoratio­n, the historic 1745 Gideon Gilpin House in Brandywine Battlefiel­d Park in Birmingham Township will reopen to the public next weekend. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies will take place at the front door of the modest Quaker farmhouse in which the young Marquis de Lafayette stayed on the night before the Battle of the Brandywine, Sept. 11, 1777. 10 Years Ago – 2007: Teachers, students, administra­tors, and parents are in the process of discussing and developing an honor code system at Radnor High School in response to recent cheating incidents there. Part-time English teacher Laura Hoover, who is new to the school district this year, said it was not a large-scale cheating incident that spurred her to approach the school administra­tion, but a few smaller incidents in her freshman class. “I offered to research different honor codes around the county, and to give them samples … and it snowballed,” Hoover said.
