Former La Salle University basketball star Doug Overton, who played and coached for the Sixers and is the head men’s basketball coach at Lincoln University, was charged this week in Lower Merion after police say witnesses reported he was exposing himself to both men and a woman on the Cynwyd Trail April 30.

Police identified the arrestee as Overton, 47, of the 2400 block of Golf Road in Philadelphia.

Overton was a standout player for La Salle who played 11 seasons in the NBA for eight teams, including a stint with the Sixers. He played 499 games and scored 2,253 points. He was a second-round pick of the Detroit Pistons in 1991.

After his playing career ended, Overton went into coaching, serving as an assistant at Saint Joseph’s, as well as the NBA’s New Jersey Nets.

In 2016, he was named the head coach at Lincoln in Chester County.

According to police, officers received numerous calls shortly after noon Sunday that a man was exposing himself on the Cynwyd Trail.

One of the callers told police the man appeared to be touching himself around his genitals. Another witness told police the man’s penis was outside of his pants and that he was continuously looking at a female in the area. The witnesses then told police he was seen walking on the trail with his penis exposed.

A male witness told police the subject was walking toward him with his penis fully out of his pants. He was described by the witness as walking “calmly and deliberately” and seemed to be aware that he was exposing himself but “seemed content with the situation,” police reported.

Police responded to the scene. Motorcycle patrol officers were able to locate the subject on the trail. The man was later identified as Overton, police reported. Three separate witnesses positively identified Overton as the man they saw on the trail exposing himself, police reported.

Overton was charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors, police said.

According to court records, Overton was arraigned April 30 and released on $10,000 unsecured bail. An attorney was not listed for him.

Overton played for several NBA teams including the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets and others.

He just finished his first year as basketball coach at Lincoln University in Oxford.

“We have no statement at this time,” Lincoln Sports Information Director Robert Heller said Tuesday evening. “The only comment would come from the president’s (Richard Green’s) office, and (interim athletic Director) Anthony Pla is meeting with him right now.”

“To be honest with you, this is the first I’m hearing of it, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not known,” said Jacob Mullins, the director of compliance for the Lincoln Athletics Department. “I can’t speak to that.”

Telephone calls and emails to Overton’s Lincoln office on Tuesday were not returned.
