100 Years Ago – 1917:

Prominent business and profession­al men of Chester have taken an active interest in the Boy Scout movement and a local council under the national organizati­on of the Boy Scouts of America has been organized. The local council was organized last night at the Chester Club, Fifth and Welsh streets. The meeting was presided over by E. Wallace Chadwick, Esq.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

The education committee of the Delaware County War Bonds Staff is launching essay contests in all senior classes of the county high school, the subject being, “Why Buy War Bonds and Stamps?” To the winner in each high school, the Treasury Department will award a $25 bond. When all essays are in, and the county judges select the best of the lot, the winner will be presented with a $100 bond.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Several Eddystone school children picketed the old elementary and junior-senior high schools, protesting demolition of the swimming pool and gymnasium. Plans for the new $789,986 elementary school at the School Park, between Ninth and 10th streets, don’t include a new pool or gymnasium. The old pool had been used by borough youths during summer recreation programs.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Seniors at Springfiel­d High have their class drinking mugs, but they’re not about to celebrate with a drinking party. Thanks to Principal Joe O’Brien, the mugs arrived – with no forewarnin­g to students – with holes drilled in the bottoms. O’Brien said he thought it was hypocritic­al to tell the students not to drink and drive and then sell them drinking mugs. Students protested one day by wearing T-shirts with beer logos. The school responded with letters of apology and an offer to refund the $14 cost of the mug.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

The local boys of summer are throwing a party for themselves tonight, one that not only has been in the planning stages for a couple of years, but was 100 years in the making. For the first time in too long, the Delaware County Baseball League is having a first-class, “all-classes” reunion. The occasion is the 100th anniversar­y season of the Delco League, which according to former league president Jim Vankoski “is the oldest incorporat­ed baseball league in America.”
