Rangers’ Hamels expected to miss 8 weeks with side strain

HOUSTON >> The Texas Rangers say lefthander Cole Hamels is expected to miss eight weeks because of a strained right oblique.

The Rangers put Hamels on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and recalled righty Anthony Bass from Triple-A Round Rock.

Hamels was scratched from his scheduled start shortly before Tuesday night’s game at Houston. He said he felt discomfort in his right side while warming up.

The four-time All-Star is 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in five starts this season. The 33-yearold is 24-6 since Texas got him from Philadelph­ia at the trade deadline in 2015.

Woman hit by stray bullet during Cardinals game

ST. LOUIS >> Police said Wednesday they were investigat­ing after a woman attending a Cardinals game was grazed in the arm by a stray bullet that apparently originated outside Busch Stadium.

The 34-year-old victim was inside the ballpark Tuesday during the game against the Brewers when she felt pain in her arm. She went to a first-aid station for treatment and a bullet was later found near her seat. She had an abrasion on one of her elbows.

Todd Porter, 54, of O’Fallon, at the game with his son and seated in front of the victim.

“Wow, I think I’ve been shot,” the woman said near the end of the eighth inning, Porter told the Post-Dispatch .

“We thought she was joking, but everybody turned around and she showed me the blood coming down from her elbow,” said Porter, who left the game. “I told my son, ‘Let’s get up out of here before someone else gets to shooting.”’ Illinois, was said he was

Injuries: Indians put Kluber on DL

The Indians put Corey Kluber on the 10day disabled list Wednesday with a lower back strain, meaning the right-hander will miss at least his next turn in the rotation. Kluber was removed from Tuesday’s start at Detroit after three innings because of back discomfort. ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. >> The Miami Marlins have put Edinson Volquez on the 10-day disabled list with a right thumb blister and recalled right-hander Nick Wittgren from Triple-A New Orleans.

The moves announced Wednesday come one day after Volquez struck out nine but allowed a career-high eight walks in 4.1 innings of the Marlins’ 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay. Manager Bob Melvin said he’s not anticipati­ng a quick return for Doolittle, an AllStar in 2014 who missed 121 games in 2015 and 59 games in 2016 with shoulder injuries.

Red Sox permanentl­y ban fan for racial slur at another fan

BOSTON >> The Boston Red Sox have permanentl­y banned a fan from Fenway Park who used a racial slur toward another fan.

The Red Sox took the action Wednesday in the wake of Baltimore star Adam Jones being racially taunted during a game in Boston.

The Red Sox said on Tuesday night it was reported to team security that a racial slur was used by one fan toward another. The Red Sox said the offending fan was ejected from the stands and has been told they are “no longer welcome at Fenway Park.” The team didn’t identify the person.
