Havertown mom brings smiles with rocks
HAVERFORD >> Delaware County Council has been rocked. The St. Joseph Grotto in Collingdale has been rocked. Countless people in the Delaware Valley and beyond have rocked or been rocked.
Jamie Sottnick of Havertown began the Delaware Valley Rocks group in January. She started the Havertown Rock Group first and seeing how it grew she started to expand it to residents in the Delaware Valley region. It became bigger than she imagined, touching lives all over the county even beyond Pennsylvania. Sottnick’s group has even been featured on 6ABC Action News.
Originally from Florida, Sottnick moved to Havertown three years ago with her husband, Louis. Her aunts in Martin County in Florida had started painting and placing rocks all over. They inspired her to start a group; it now has 12,320 followers and keeps growing. People share photos of the rocks they find on Facebook.
“When I opened the group, my inbox was constantly blowing up. It started growing. It has become so big. Such a simple idea has brought so many people together. We are all over the Delaware Valley including the Jersey Shore and Maryland. It is just growing and growing. I started a as Havertown Rocks after placing hundreds and hundreds of rocks all over Havertown. Quickly my messenger blew up and people wanted to be part of it. Some people were from in Upper Darby and Springfield. That’s when I changed the name from Havertown/Delaware County Rocks and then opened it up to Delaware Valley so no one would feel left out,” said Sottnick.
Sottnick painted a series of rocks to give to Delaware County Council for Mental Health Awareness Month. Members of council went out and hid the rocks so that others can find them.
