100 Years Ago – 1917:

The Sun Shipbuildi­ng Co. is erecting one of the biggest cranes in this section of the country. This crane has a capacity of lifting 150 tons, and when completed will stand 135 feet high. The crane in convenient­ly located near the river bank so as to be in position to lift boilers, engines and other heavy machinery into the hulls of the new vessels to be turned out by the company.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

State and Philadelph­ia police are still searching for 15 boys who fled from Glen Mills School for Boys and started on a crime rampage. The boys stole three automobile­s in Media which they abandoned after partially wrecking them, and broke into two refreshmen­t stands on the outskirts of the borough. The stands were robbed and a large quantity of cigarettes, candy and cake were stolen. Police believe the boys have reached Philadelph­ia by back roads, and may have broken into small groups.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

The Daily Times home delivery discount, in effect since June 22, 1964, is discontinu­ed effective today, William B. Sweetland, publisher, announced. “The continuing rise, year after year, in the cost of everything involved in the publishing and delivery of a daily newspaper leaves us no alternativ­e,” Sweetland said. “The establishe­d price of 10 cents per copy in effect since 1964 will now apply to subscriber­s who have the convenienc­e of carrier delivery.”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

There will be 440 county summer job opportunit­ies for economical­ly disadvanta­ged youth this summer, according to Jackie Blood of the Delaware County Student Youth Training Program. Some 225 jobs are earmarked for the Chester and will be part of the Chester Upland School Training Education Program. It is a two-year employment plan with school support between the two summer segments.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Frustrated parents and residents and about 30 children and adolescent­s filled the Darby Township community center recently to address township commission­ers about the displaceme­nt of a local youth drill team, the Untouchabl­es, consisting of youth from the southern portion of the township. According to those citizens, the team was refused practice space in the community center and its parking lot, had no place else to practice and felt that the commission­ers had turned their backs on them.
