Learn women mathematicians’ story
NORWOOD >> Sister Circle holds a free film viewing of “Hidden Figures” at 7 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, May 23, at Norwood Library, 513 Welcome Ave. “Hidden Figures” tells the true story of the three key women mathematicians who helped NASA take the lead in the Space Race. Distinguished by their unparalleled skill and their unflinching bravery, these women carved new territory for America using only their outstanding math skills.
In the 1960s, the work of getting man into space wasn’t done by processors, it was done by actual human beings who worked the incredibly complicated math formulas necessary to get men from Earth into space and back again. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan were the real and remarkable women behind “Hidden Figures.” Academic institutions had been using women as computers since the late 19th century. This important film documents how a team of amazing women “human computers,” who happened to be black, were treated by NASA and the predominately white male workers and were able to overcome discrimination.
Refreshments are provided. For information, email Rose Trefz at rosetrefz@gmail.com
