Upper Chi welcomes seniors to get SEPTA ID May 31

UPPER CHICHESTER >> State Rep. Steve Barrar hosts a SEPTA Senior Key Photo Day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, at the Upper Chichester Library, 3374 Chichester Ave., #19, Boothwyn.

Pennsylvan­ia residents 65 and older, who have a form of acceptable identifica­tion to apply for the Senior Ride ID, are eligible to participat­e in SEPTA’s Senior Ride Free Program. Senior riders who decline to use their Pa. driver’s license or state-issued ID card can register at the library and have their picture taken for the new, free SEPTA Key Senior ID card.

Cards are mailed at a later date, saving residents from driving to and from Philadelph­ia. Residents wishing to participat­e should schedule a May 31 appointmen­t by calling Barrar’s office at 610-3585925.

Aston kicks off summer reading

ASTON >> Aston Public Library, 3270 Concord Road, opens its Summer Reading Club at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World.” Children of all ages are welcome to come out to hear a story, make a craft and have fun. Miss Debbie tells guests how to sign up for the Summer Reading Program and discusses the programs and prizes that are held every week throughout the summer.

Marple honors longtime board member

MARPLE >> Marple Library Director LaTanya Burno recently presented former library board member Bob Hayes with an Award of Gratitude in recognitio­n of his 20 years as a board member. Hayes, a lawyer at Cozen, O’Connor, began his first term in January of 1996 and resigned in December of 2016.

Beginning in 2002, Bob served as treasurer of the board and offered financial advice and monitored endowment funds for the library. In addition, Bob used his unique skills when phrasing motions and revamping library policies. His calm and pleasant manner facilitate­d discussion and then agreement. In his time on the board, Bob helped to ensure that Marple Library remain a vital resource for the township residents and all users.

The library, 2599 Sproul Road, Broomall, welcomes facilitato­r Joseph Erdeljac for “Il Trovatore”, an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, from 1-3 p.m. Wednesdays May 24 and 31. The presentati­ons are free and open to the public. Space is limited; registrati­on is requested.

Mr. Erdeljac teaches guests all they need to know about composer and his work. Attendees listen along to the full recording as they follow along with the libretto.

Author talk with Delco native May 30

Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr, welcomes author and business journalist Leigh Gallagher to discuss her book, “The Airbnb Story: How Three Ordinary Guys Disrupted an Industry, Made Billions, and Created Plenty of Controvers­y,” from 5:306:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30. Originally from the Media area and a Strath Haven High School,, Gallagher is also the author of “The End of the Suburbs,” published in 2013.

“The Airbnb Story” tells the behind-thescenes story of the creation and growth of the online lodging platform that has become, in under a decade, one of the largest providers of accommodat­ions in the world. Now valued at $30 billion, the privately held company, started by three unemployed college graduates in their San Francisco apartment, has had a radical and transforma­tive impact on the travel industry, upsetting many business and political interests along the way.

Gallagher is an assistant managing editor at Fortune, where she also hosted the weekly online broadcast, “Fortune Live.” She is also co-chair of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit and oversees the magazine’s 40 Under 40 editorial franchise. She lives in New York and appears regularly on CBS This Morning, CNBC, CNN, public radio’s “Marketplac­e,” and many other programs.
