100 Years Ago – 1917:
The steamer Cape May, which plies each summer in the waters of the Delaware, will be brought to Chester and transformed in to a modern floating hotel with accommodations for 600 men. The innovation as planned is the latest and a novel solution of the housing problem in the city, and will be conducted under first-class hotel regulations. The Cape May will be tied up permanently along the bulkhead of the Stewart Distilling Co. between the Alpha Boat Club property and the Sun Shipbuilding Co.’s plant east of Welsh Street.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
Seeing two young women solicit two men in the Bethel Court district, and then enter a house at 2 Quality St., patrolmen Reed and Morelli obtained a warrant and, accompanied by four other officers, raided the house. As the officers entered, one of the men dived from a window and escaped. The other man was found hiding on the roof of a shed in the rear.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
Fledgling District Attorney Paul R. Sand has been endorsed for appointment to the Delaware County Common Pleas Court judgeship left vacant by the death of Judge Thomas A. Curran. The 60-year-old Upper Darby attorney – just nominated in the May 16 primary for his first full term as district attorney – has been recommended for the judgeship by the Delaware County Republican Board of Supervisors (War Board).
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Aston commissioners approved a planning module for “Village Green Meadows,” a 10-lot subdivision to be located behind Wendy’s on Route 452. The land was recently sold to developer David Yarnall of Chadds Ford, who plans to build six two-story colonials on a cul-de-sac that will be called Jessica’s Way.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
A Ridley Township man awaiting trial on assault charges is back behind bars after violating the house arrest conditions of his bail. The 26-year-old was on house arrest awaiting his June 4 criminal trial for an alleged assault that took place outside of a local steak shop on Feb. 18. He had been on house arrest due to a subsequent arrest, several hours after he was released on unsecured bail for the Feb. 18 incident. He had allegedly became involved in an argument with his former girlfriend in a Ridley Township bar parking lot, leading to a confrontation at her Chester home and arrest by the Chester police.
