Visit Ridley to hear tale of rowing across the Atlantic

-

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP >> Ridley Township Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom, welcomes George Pagano at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, to tell the exciting tale of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean with his teammate Caitlin Miller. The two left from La Gomera in the Canary Islands and traveled 3,000 miles to Antigua in the Caribbean. They manned a self-sustaining boat and received no assistance in their crossing, which took two months.

They left the Canaries in December 2015 and arrived in Antigua in February 2016. They set the world record for fastest and youngest mixed pair to row across the Atlantic, and were also are the youngest Americans to row across the Atlantic. George and Caitlin did the row for charity, benefiting the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter. George’s grandfather, Walter Benn, died of ALS, and George entered the 2015 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge as a way to honor him.

In this presentation, George shows show two videos, one at the beginning of the presentation and one at the end. They give the audience an idea of his ocean rowing journey and highlight key events (a hurricane, sea life, rowing at night). There is time for questions at the end of the presentation.

This free program will be held in Garling Hall. To register, call 610-583-0593, email reference@ridleylibrary.org or visit the library.

Author talk with Delco native tonight

LOWER MERION >> Ludington Library, 5 S. Bryn Mawr Ave., Bryn Mawr, welcomes author and business journalist Leigh Gallagher to discuss her book, “The Airbnb Story: How Three Ordinary Guys Disrupted an Industry, Made Billions, and Created Plenty of Controversy,” from 5:30-6:30 tonight, Tuesday, May 30. Originally from the Media area and a Strath Haven High School,, Gallagher is also the author of “The End of the Suburbs,” published in 2013.

“The Airbnb Story” tells the behind-thescenes story of the creation and growth of the online lodging platform that has become, in under a decade, one of the largest providers of accommodations in the world. Now valued at $30 billion, the privately held company, started by three unemployed college graduates in their San Francisco apartment, has had a radical and transformative impact on the travel industry, upsetting many business and political interests along the way.

Gallagher is an assistant managing editor at Fortune, where she also hosted the weekly online broadcast, “Fortune Live.” She is also co-chair of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit and oversees the magazine’s 40 Under 40 editorial franchise. She lives in New York and appears regularly on CBS This Morning, CNBC, CNN, public radio’s “Marketplace,” and many other programs.

Books are available for purchase and signing at the event. The author talk is free and open to the public.
