100 Years Ago – 1917: To make room for the new Chester municipal building, the work of razing the “old” Farmers Market house in the rear of city hall and facing Fourth Street will be started tomorrow morning. The feat of tearing out the first stone from the “old” market will be marked with appropriat­e ceremonies.

75 Years Ago – 1942: A threat to remove the warden of the county’s prisons was made by President Judge Albert Dutton MacDade when he criticized the warden for permitting prisoners to wander around the streets of Media. MacDade criticized condition in the Media Jail and in Broadmeado­w Farms, saying

that a meeting will be held shortly with the court that he wants the warden to attend. The warden is a henchman of John J. McClure and has long been a member of the powerful “War Board.”

50 Years Ago – 1967: The Pennsylvan­ia Railroad has begun work in Delaware County to prepare PRR tracks for the new highspeed line scheduled to begin operating between New York and Washington by October. Workmen are replacing convention­al rail with a welded rail which comes in sections up to 1,400 feet long. The new service will cut present time between Philadelph­ia and New York by 17 minutes

and between Washington and New York by about 50 minutes. The cars will be able to attain speeds of 125 miles an hour.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

President Bush’s refusal to meet with a dozen Republican supporters of the V-22 Orsprey tilt-rotor is a “snub,” according to a Texas congressma­n. Supporters had asked for a 15-minute audience to explain to Bush why they believe Pentagon opposition to the Osprey is unfounded. Leading Osprey advocate U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon, R-7, said the rejection was “disappoint­ing” but will not ultimately affect funding for the Osprey.

10 Years Ago – 200 7:An Upper Darby woman racked up her fifth DUI arrest Monday night after she allegedly crashed a borrowed car into a mailbox and then drove away from the accident scene, Marple police said. The 46-year-old was driving with a DUI-related suspended license when she crashed a car she did not have permission to drive. As the arresting officer approached, he saw the woman retrieving a tire iron and jack from the car trunk. She allegedly told the officer that the car’s tire blew out right where it was, as she drove down the road.
