100 Years Ago – 1917:

Do you want to go to France? If so, young man, step up and enlist in Companies D and C, units of the Sixth Pennsylvan­ia Infantry. The companies they need 200 recruits to put them on a war footing. A seven-day campaign is on and 55 “rookies” have been secured in the first two days of the drive.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Elsie Barger, 18-year-old drum majorette of Ridley Township High School band, was overcome by the heat during the Memorial Day parade Saturday afternoon. She was treated Chester Hospital. Her home is at 428 Highland Ave., Milmont Park. John Patton, of in 614 E. 14th St., Chester, told police Saturday night that when in the vicinity of 15th and Walnut streets, he was attacked and bitten by a large cat.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

A Springfiel­d High School senior who admits committing a “senior class prank” – painting “67” on school buses – has gone to court to try to attend his commenceme­nt exercises. The suit states that student’s father paid for the cost of repainting the buses; the student was barred from all senior activities, including the senior prom and class trip to Washington, while paying the full senior dues that include those expenses; suspended for five days from April 17-21; required to clean the school every day up to and including June 1; and had all grades reduced by nine points.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

The end of an era in Newtown is under way with the demolition of the Dunwoody home on West Chester Pike. A township landmark since 1924, the stately gray stone building with the white pillars is being torn down because it would cost too much to bring it up to present code standards and maintain it for continued use as a personal care retirement facility, according to Robert Domagalski, Dunwoody president and chief executive officer.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Congregati­on Beth Israel of Media has recognized John Vairo of Media as its 2007 Friend of the Community Award. Vairo, emeritus CEO of the Penn State Delaware County campus, is widely credited with directing the campus in its expansion years. He directed the assembly of a 40-person board to raise the initial funding for the Rocky Run YMCA. The recipients of the award can be of any faith, but all exemplify the Jewish tradition of Tikkun Olam, or “repairing the world” through charity, volunteeri­sm and dedication.
