RTM seeks community input on enrollment
Rose Tree Media School District invites community members invited to participate in “Path to Working Together as a Community to Accommodate Projected Enrollment Growth” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at Penncrest High School, 134 Barren Road, Media. Discussions and presentations focus on the condition of existing school facilities and what needs to be done to plan for growing enrollment. If residents have thoughts or opinions on addressing enrollment growth and its impact on facilities, the district wants to hear from them.
Last year, a demographic study was performed to determine the impact of an upcoming enrollment increase of 233 students due to projected real estate developments in Edgmont Township, Media Borough and Middletown Township. The next step in preparing for this increase is a building capacity study to be completed by the architectural firm Marotta/ Man. As part of the firm’s preparation, they will meet with administrators and staff members to discuss current and future needs at each school, followed by the public meeting with the community on June 6.
Through this open dialogue and idea exchange, the district hopes to discuss the condition of existing school facilities and how they’re used and hear the community’s input on the use of the schools by the community, the current grade structure, the number of students served at each school and maintaining or making changes to the current schools.
WSSD student’s art work on display
The Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, holds an exhibit featuring the work of George H. Slick Fellowship recipient Joy Xiong with an opening reception at 7 p.m. Monday, June 5. The event is free and open to the public. Xiong’s work remains on display through June 10.
The George H. Slick Arts Endowment was created to honor Dr. George H. Slick, superintendent of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District from 1987 to 1996 and 2006-2007. A gifted, dedicated educator and administrator, Slick helped all those concerned with the school district to remember that they should seek to do what is in the best interest of the school district’s young people, that our children are both our special responsibility and our nation’s future.
Although Slick has been keenly interested in all aspects of school life, curricular and extracurricular, he has been particularly interested in the arts, visual and performing. This endowment is not meant to champion one part of the school district’s curriculum or life over others. Rather, it is intended to recognize the importance of the arts in a nation that aspires to greatness.
Students of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District can apply for the George H. Slick Fellowship during their freshman year. Recipients present a body of art or a recital performance at the conclusion of their junior year.
