100 Years Ago – 1917: Approximat­ely 7,762 Chester men responded to the call of President Wilson yesterday and registered for the new Army. Coupled with this, 1,600 nonresiden­ts enrolled at the office of City Clerk Newsome making a grant total of 9,362 young men living in the city who were no “slackers” and signed up to do their “bit” for Uncle Sam.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Appearing before President Judge A.D. MacDade in Juvenile Court, a 17-yearold Thurlow Street youth admitted he had been rifling the poor boxes in several Catholic churches in Chester. He was committed to the reformator­y

until he is 21. The youth, following complaints filed with the police by church rectors, was seen emerging from a side door of St. Michael’s Church on May 24 by Patrolman Joseph Devlin.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Trustees of Delaware County’s proposed community college will meet at 8 tonight to adopt an operating budget for its first year. The trustees will meet at the Media Inn Motor Lodge. Trustee Mrs. Norman Shain of Middletown said the trustees plan to enact a $418,000 budget. The budget must be approved by 14 of the 21 local school boards sponsoring the county’s two-year college and a by a majority of the 147 school directors on participat­ing boards.

25 Years Ago – 1992: A 19-year-old Chester woman was sleeping comfortabl­y on the sofa in her mother’s Third Street apartment when she was abruptly awakened when a car smashed through the living room wall, struck the sofa and propelled it 3 to 4 feet, according to police. The woman and the driver, a 30-year-old Claymont, Del., man, were taken to Community Hospital of Chester. The driver was traveling eastbound on Third Street, entered the intersecti­on of Pusey of Street and was hit on the passenger side by another

vehicle, sending him into the apartment wall.

10 Years Ago – 2007: A venture capital firm that focuses on funding $2 to $4 million investment­s has planted roots in Chester, according to officials. Global Internet Venture Partners has signed a multi-year lease for a nearly 1,000 square feet office at University Technology Park at 1350 Edgmont Ave., E. Jean Krack, Keystone Innovation Zone coordinato­r, announced. “The premise of the technology park is to bring technology into Chester,” he said. He said GIV’s focus on small investment­s is a perfect fit.
