Last day to see WSSD student’s art work

NETHER PROVIDENCE » The Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, holds an exhibit featuring the work of George H. Slick Fellowship recipient Joy Xiong, on display through today, June 10.

The George H. Slick Arts Endowment was created to honor Dr. George H. Slick, superintendent of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District from 1987 to 1996 and 2006-2007. A gifted, dedicated educator and administrator, Slick helped all those concerned with the school district to remember that they should seek to do what is in the best interest of the school district’s young people, that our children are both our special responsibility and our nation’s future.

Although Slick has been keenly interested in all aspects of school life, curricular and extracurricular, he has been particularly interested in the arts, visual and performing. This endowment is not meant to champion one part of the school district’s curriculum or life over others. Rather, it is intended to recognize the importance of the arts in a nation that aspires to greatness.

Students of the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District can apply for the George H. Slick Fellowship during their freshman year. Recipients present a body of art or a recital performance at the conclusion of their junior year.

Fight litter, win cash with PRC

Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) is conducting its annual Lens On Litter Photo Contest to shed light on litter in the state. Deadline to submit entries is Oct. 31, 2017. Kids are encouraged to grab their cameras during summer vacation and take photos of the worst litter examples they see in their Pennsylvania neighborhoods.

In the student category, three prizes are awarded: First place winner receives $1,000; second place, $500; and third place, $250. The same prizes are awarded in an adult category.

Entries should help bring awareness to how litter threatens public health and safety, scenic beauty, property values, the environment or wildlife. Entries are judged on six criteria: Anti-litter message, originality, photographic technique, quality of photo, originality of title and severity of the litter. Contestants are also encouraged to initiate a clean-up of the subject area and provide a photo of the results of their efforts.

Entries (limit five per person, no smaller than 4x6 and no bigger than 8x10) should be sent to PRC Lens On Litter Contest, 3606 Providence Road, Newtown Square, PA 19073. High resolution digital submissions may be sent to lensonlitter@prc.org. On a 3x5 card, all entries (including digital) must include the entrant’s name, address, telephone number, title given to photo and location of litter site. Students should also include age, grade and name of school. Photos will not be returned and will become the property of PRC.

Sponsors for the 2017 contest include Sheetz Inc. For contest information, email lensonlitter@prc.org. For general information and to see previous winning photos, visit www.prc.org/lens-litter
