100 Years Ago – 1917:

Hundreds of flower lovers attended the opening of the second annual flower show under the direction of the Horticultu­ral Society of the Civic League in the Sixth Regiment Armory, Eighth and Sproul streets, Chester. The show won the highest praise for the committee in charge by the many visitors.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

Here is encouragin­g news for Chester taxpayers. With the presentmen­t to city council of the city’s financial statement for May by Director of Accounts and Finance William P. Lear, showing a cash balance of $358,908.12, inquiry was made as to the possible of a lower tax rate for 1943. Mayor Clifford H. Peoples announced that there was such possibilit­y.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

The Pilgrim Virgin Statue for Pennsylvan­ia of Our Lady of Fatima will be on display at the Blue Army of Delaware County rosary devotions or world peace scheduled for next week at St. Robert’s Roman Catholic Church, Chester. The statue was blessed by the Bishop of Fatima, Portugal, and crowned by the Rt. Rev. John Graham, Bishop of Philadelph­ia, at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Philadelph­ia. Catholics throughout the world are observing the 50th anniversar­y of the apparition­s of the Blessed Virgin of Fatima.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

10 Years Ago – 2007:

A motorist allegedly smoking pot – with her 5-yearold child in the car – was charged with driving under the influence and endangerin­g the welfare of children. “Not only are they putting themselves and the child at risk they are putting the community at risk,” Upper Darby Police Superinten­dent Chitwood said. “The child told the officer, ‘My mommy always smokes weed in the car.’ What kind of mother is she that her 5-year-old daughter can make that kind of statement?”
