100 Years Ago – 1917:

This district still needs 924 men for the regular army to complete its quota, according to a dispatch received from Col. Charles A.P. Hatfield this morning. These men must be obtained by June 20 and Chester is a part of the unit and must furnish its quota. During the past few days recruiting has been below the standard here. Sgt. C.H. Pierce is now making a heavy poster campaign in the hopes of stirring the men to enlist.

75 Years Ago – 1942:

In the future, persons rounded up during raids conducted by the local police, will find it necessary to appear in court as witnesses. In addition to being assessed a fine, as an inmate of a disorderly or bawdy house, such individual will be required to provide bond for appearance in court. This new ruling became effective following hearing two alleged liquor law violations, involving a total of 33 men and women in addition to alleged proprietor­s of two houses raided early Sunday.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Gov. Robert P. Casey is expected to announce this morning the state will provide millions of dollars to insure that Metro Machine Corp. of Norfolk, Va., will move into the former Pennsylvan­ia Shipbuildi­ng facility in Chester. Metro will have to invest in capital equipment for the yard, much of which was auctioned off by Penn Ship. “In my career in shipbuildi­ng, which spans 25 years, that yard was held in high esteem and it could not have reached those levels without a competent work force,” said Metro President Richard Goldbach.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

Parkside Elementary School’s theme this school year is “The little school with the big heart,” and students lived up to the motto when they worked together to help a sick boy get his wish. Elizabeth Conlan, 10, a fifth-grader at Parkside Elementary, learned about Shane Bernier’s wish to set a world record for receiving the most birthday cards from a church flier. Conlan, with friends Jessica Nalimowski and Nadia Bellm collected 307 homemade birthday cards and $60 in loose change
