Man gunned down on Chester street

-

CHESTER » A 28-year-old city resident was gunned down in broad daylight Thursday morning, police said.

The fatal shooting occurred about 9:45 a.m. in the 500 block of Tilghman Street.

Chester police responded to reports of shots fired to find a man laying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as William James Corbin Jr., 28.

Chief James Nolan IV said police are searching for multiple actors involved in the crime, saying that it wasn’t clear if the assailants escaped on foot or fled to a nearby vehicle.

“Every indication is that the actors were on foot,” Nolan said. “We believe there was more than one (assailants), we’re working with the theory that there was more than one.”

With the assailants at large Thursday night, a motive for the slaying remains unclear. At the scene, a tent obstructed the view of where Corbin’s body was lying in the street. Gunshots shattered the window of a nearby Lincoln sedan that had a bloody handprint smeared on the hood. It appeared Corbin had first fallen over the vehicle before stumbling into the street.

Delaware County CID detectives took a medium-sized mountain bike into evidence, but Nolan said it wasn’t clear whether Corbin or an assailant had been riding the bike, or it was there for some other unknown reason.

Corbin’s shooting was the 14th homicide this year in the city of Chester. There have been 15 homicides total in Delaware County so far this year.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is urged to contact Chester Detective Benjamin Thomas at 610-447-8426 or CID Detective Michael Jay at 610891-4711.
