100 Years Ago – 1917:

Caught in the act of passing a half-pint flask of whiskey to a prisoner in the City Hall jail, an East Third Street man was fined $10 and costs in Municipal Court this morning. He visited the jail 9 o’clock this morning with a feed for one of his friends that was locked up. While handing his friend the lunch between the iron bars, he attempted to pass in a flask of “joy water.” Court Interprete­r “Jake” Rosenberg, who happened in the jail building at the time, caught him in the act and immediatel­y summoned Patrolman Ryan. 75 Years Ago – 1942: “The Dutch are preparing for the day when the second front will be opened and the Germans vanished from our homeland,” Dr. Johan van Beusekom, former official of the Dutch Department of Interior of Batavia told the Optimists Club at their weekly luncheon meeting at the Chester Club.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Upper Darby GOP leader Samuel R. Dickey became a member of the Delaware County Republican Board of Supervisor­s (War Board) Friday, according to a board spokesman. The significan­ce of Dickey going on the board is being widely debated in and out of party circles. Before the death of county GOP leader John J. McClure’s death in 1965, it was said that only Dickey could come close to matching his political ability.

25 Years Ago – 1992:

A Kennett Square woman, trapped in her burning car after a Route 1 head-on collision with a truck in front of the Chadds Ford Café in Birmingham Township, was listed in critical condition but stable last night. State police said the efforts of passersby probably saved the women’s life. Her vehicle was trapped under the truck, which exploded and engulfed the car in flames. William Johnston and Jack Bellepede, both of Aldan, were among the first on the scene and worked with about 20 to save the woman. The two men acquired fire extinguish­ers, and, with Robert Stark of Darby, attached a dump truck’s chain to her car to pull it out from under the truck.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

North State Road residents who lodged complaints about an alleged drug house on their street to Upper Darby police and to the Daily Times Sound Off section got their wish. A woman and her two children, living in squalor, are facing drug charges after a raid by the Tactical Narcotics Team headed by Detective Capt. George Rhoades Jr.
