100 Years Ago – 1917:

Never before in the history of the Pennsylvan­ia Military College were commenceme­nt day exercises marked with so much war fervor as the graduation of the Class of 1917 being held today. Trustees President Wanamaker read the following telegram from Theodore Roosevelt: “John Wanamaker, through you I send the boys of the Pennsylvan­ia Military College my heartiest greetings. I am sure they will be turned out first-class citizens in time of peace and first class soldiers in time of war. Theodore Roosevelt.”

75 Years Ago – 1942:

“Satisfacto­ry” progress in the planning of an industrial defense highway from Chester to Philadelph­ia was reported to industrial and civic leaders at a meeting at the Chester Club. The present route through Essington Avenue and Island Road is carrying 12,000 vehicles daily. An expected 74,000 war workers would take advantage of the proposed highway daily and the number would reach 160,000 as war industry employment increases.

50 Years Ago – 1967:

Further action to establish Delaware County’s community college — which had been scheduled to open in September — was blocked today by an opinion approved by the full court. Judge Francis J. Catania, who wrote the opinion, “permanentl­y enjoined” the college’s trustees “from taking any “further action” toward establishi­ng a college under its present “agreement and plan of sponsorshi­p.” He said the local sponsorshi­p agreement violates the state constituti­on “and is therefore void and unenforcea­ble.”

25 Years Ago – 1992:

Refinancin­g old debts at today’s low interest rates will save the Garnet Valley School District approximat­ely $235,000 next year, and the school board is expected to approve the resale of two loans. There was discussion whether to pay off one of the loans earlier than originally planned.

10 Years Ago – 2007:

A multistate offender with four known aliases is back in jail for theft, resisting arrest and kicking out the rear window of a police vehicle, Upper Darby police said. The 22-year-old was arrested after police responded to a report of the theft of checks by the defendant’s roommate. A witness followed him to Sears at 69th and Walnut streets, after the checks were discovered missing, seeing him place several DVD players into his vehicle.
