Joan Augusta Taylor
Joan Augusta Taylor, known to her family and friends as “Jojo”, died peacefully on Saturday morning, May 13, 2017 at Plush Mills in Wallingford. She was 87, and died from natural causes.
Joan was born in Buffalo, NY on August 22, 1929. The daughter of Alfred & Dorothy (Hickman) Gneiser, both deceased. She was the eldest among her 3 siblings, Robert, Valerie, and David.
A 1947 graduate of Bennett High School in Buffalo, Joan went on to Endicott Junior College in Beverly, MA and received an Associate of Arts degree in Merchandising in 1949 as well as being editor of the yearbook Mingotide and elected to Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Upon graduation, Joan moved to York, PA working in advertising and promotion for WNOW radio. Married Richard J. “Dick” Taylor on June 1, 1957 in York. They moved to Swarthmore, PA in 1969 with 5 children. Joan managed publicity and advertising for a realtor in the early ‘70s. Executive Director of the YWCA of Chester from 1975 - 1990. Member of the Board of Directors of First Keystone Bank from 1976 to 2010. Joan served at various times on the boards of Family and Community Service of Delaware County, Community Nursing Service of Chester, United Way of Southeast Delaware County, and Crozer-Chester Medical Center’s
Community Mental Health Advisory Board. Former member of Delaware County Press Club, Rotary Club of Chester, Junior League of Philadelphia, the Swarthmore Swim Club, and the Swarthmore Tennis Club.
She is survived by her 5 children: Richard of Ridgecrest, CA, David of Arvada, CO, Susan (Eugene) Adami, of Media, Michael (Lynne Christos) of Tokyo, Japan, and Amy (Woodley) Wardell of Bernardston, MA. 7 grandchildren: Taylor, Victoria, and Jessica Adami. Michael, Nathaniel, Oliver, and Finlay Taylor. A sister, Valerie North of Dover, PA. Pre-deceased by husband Dick Taylor, brothers Robert Gneiser, and David Gneiser.
A memorial service is planned for 11:00am on Friday, June 30th at Trinity Episcopal Church, 301 North Chester Road, Swarthmore, PA 19081 with Pastor Pat Oglesby officiating.
