100 Years Ago – 1917:
The new “Bone Dry Law” passed by Congress goes into effect on July 1. After that date the shipping or carrying of alcoholic liquors into dry territory will be absolutely forbidden. It will also be unlawful to send advertising matter relative to alcoholic beverages into these sections. The Chester Times and the Morning Republican, in line with this situation, and following the example of a great many of the other newspapers, will discontinue liquor advertising.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
From Chief Air Raid Warden Charles D. Hummer: “The inhabitants of London banded together during the intensive raids of a year ago for the united defense of their homes and lives. We are producing more war supplies than any other area in the country, and we are a few short minutes from the horizon over the Atlantic Ocean whence may come those enemy bombers we fear. Instead of waiting until bombs start falling, let us make those preparations which are possible now.”
50 Years Ago – 1967:
A Navy jet airplane slammed into a water tank in Aston, bursting the 10-million-gallon container and sending a 20-foot high wall of water 200 yards down a hill. No one was injured in the crash, but six children barely escaped drowning and an elderly woman nearly was crushed by a 200-pound airplane seat which dropped through the porch roof of her trailer home. The pilot bailed out at 8,000 feet and parachuted to safety, landing in an orchard in Middletown. The demolished tank was one of eight 10-million-gallon Chester Water Authority store facilities at the site.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Correspondent Christian Thompson asked at Houlihan’s in Springfield: Would Sen. Harris Wofford (D-Pa.) be a good choice as Bill Clinton’s running mate? Bonnie Pokorny, a registered nurse from Philadelphia responded “No, I don’t he’d make a good vice president. But then neither does the one we’ve got.” Evelyn Nade of Lansdowne, a housewife/ bookkeeper, responded “I think he would, but I don’t like Clinton.”
10 Years Ago – 2007:
Penn-Delco School District Superintendent Leslye Abrutyn and Business Manager John Steffy presented a 2007-2008 operating budget totaling $46.9 million, reflecting a $2.1 million or 4.33 percent increase over last year’s budget. Millage is proposed at 21.031 mills. I
