Springfiel­d Army sergeant added to county tribute board

- Delaware County residents who have family members actively serving in the military are invited to submit a 4 x 6 color photograph of the individual, along with the service member’s name, town of residence and their official military address to the Public

MEDIA » Delaware County Council honored U.S. Army Sergeant Phillip Hackler of Springfiel­d by having his family place his photograph on the Armed Services Tribute Board in a ceremony on June 7. Council welcomed his parents Stephen and Karen Hackler, grandparen­ts Edward and Edith Laguna, sisters Lauren Homony and Lisa Kiesel, uncles James and Edward Jr. Laguna to the government center to post Sgt. Hackler’s photo on the Armed Services Tribute Board displayed in the lobby.

“As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to forget that brave men and women continue to risk their lives every day to keep us safe here at home. Delaware County is committed to rememberin­g and to supporting our troops until they are safely home,” said County Council Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr.

“One way we honor our troops is by posting their photo on the Armed Services Tribute Board and by recognizin­g their families,” Civera said. “Today we recognize Army Sgt. Phillip Hackler.”

Sgt. Hackler grew up in Springfiel­d and is a 1996 graduate of Springfiel­d High School. During August 2001, he enlisted in the Army beginning a long and accomplish­ed career. Hackler has completed four tours of duty in Iraq and two tours in Kuwait, serving 68 months in combat service overseas.

During his service, Hackler has received a Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal, five Accommodat­ion Medals, fix Achievemen­t Medals, two Valorous Unit Awards, Iraq Campaign Medals with seven stars, a Global War on Terrorist Medal, five Overseas Ribbons, an Artic Service Medal and a Tank Drivers Badge. He has completed N.C.O. Profession­al Developmen­t School and qualified on various U.S. Army arms and weapons.

The Armed Services Tribute Board recognizes Delaware County’s courageous men and women who are actively serving in the military. It offers an opportunit­y for residents and County employees to recognize members of the military and to write to them to show support.
