Tecco and Toal turn Narberth into winner

In a game where Narberth and Chester combined for 14 runs and 18 hits, defense was the difference as the defending champion Mudcats held on for an 8-6 victory in the Delco League at Narberth Park Saturday afternoon.

Narberth turned three double plays in the final three innings, all by shortstop Rich Tecco and second baseman Tom Toal, to spoil Chester’s comeback bid. None were bigger than the twin-killing the pair turned to end the game.

Chester had three runs on the board and runners at first and second when Tecco and Toal teamed up for the third time. Brian Miller, the third pitcher of the game for Narberth, induced that game-ending double play. Evan Raiburn, who pitched the fifth and sixth innings, threw the other two double plays.

Steve DeBarberie broke the game open with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. That gave Narberth a 5-1 lead. He finished 2-for-3. Tom Dougherty drilled a solo homer in the second inning and Nick Bralczyk pitched the first four innings to get the win. WAYNE 4, UPPER DARBY 0 » Jimmy Kingsbury and Josh Rickard combined on a one-hit shutout, the fourth shutout of the season for Wayne.

Kingsbury did most of the work. He allowed one hit and fanned seven in six innings. Rickards finished it off with a pair of strikeouts to help Wayne move into a tie for first place with Aston Valley.

Michael Schmucker went the distance and helped his cause at the plate to lead Aston Valley to an 11-6 victory over Highland Park.

Schmucker whiffed 10 and was 4-for-4. Ryan Kester added two hits including a home run and two walks.

First Pat Shevlin came up big with his arm and then he came through with the bat to lead the Marple Tigers to a 3-2 victory over Aston Valley.

With Aston Valley up, 2-1, Shevlin fanned two in the top of the seventh inning to keep it a one-run deficit. Then, with two outs and two strikes on him, Shevlin laced a two-run walk-off single to win it. Shevlin finished 3-for-4 and took over for Kevin Sessa, who fanned seven in six innings.

Tony Valente had three hits and drove in both runs for Aston Valley. Chris Bateman went the route on the hill and struck out six.
