Media Eye Works Ltd. Optical Shop hit a milestone in June when it celebrated 25 years of service to the Media and Delaware County communities. Media Eye Works, located in the Mielcarek Center at 319 W. State St., is headed by Lacey Mielcarek, who recently took over leadership responsibilities for the shop from her mother, Eileen Mielcarek.

“I am thrilled to have my daughter Lacey evolve Media Eye Works for a new generation in Media,” said Eileen Mielcarek, who founded the optical shop in 1992. “While Lacey is known for her technical depth, she is also the ideal leader to ensure that our eyewear designs and lens innovations are in tune with the changing needs of our local area.”

Lacey gives credit to her father, the late Dr. Lee Mielcarek, for instilling a philosophy of personalized attention which has been the shop’s hallmark since its founding. “We pride ourselves in spending whatever one-on-one time is necessary to get the details meticulously right to delight our customers,” she said.

FMFCU CEO gets national honor

Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union President and CEO John D. Unangst was chosen CEO of the Year among credit unions with $250 million-plus in assets by the National Association of FederallyInsured Credit Unions (NAFCU). He will be recognized during NAFCU’s 50th annual conference in mid-June.

“The board of directors, management team, and employees congratulate John Unangst on receiving this prestigious award,” said Patrick Killian, FMFCU chairman of the board. “His exemplary leadership and ardent dedication to FMFCU and the credit union movement have been inspiring.”

Under his stewardship for over 40 years, Unangst has led the growth of FMFCU from one branch with less than $1 million in assets to 40branches and $1billion in assets. Only five percent of all credit unions are over the $1 billion milestone.

In addition, Unangst led the formation of two Credit Union Service Organizations that continue impacting the credit union industry. In 1986, FMFCU formed State Financial Network, LLC. to offer mortgages and services to other credit unions and their members. More recently in 2013, the Credit Union Network for Financial Literacy was created to offer The Berenstain Bears Financial Literacy Program to credit unions.

“I will be accepting this award on behalf of the dedicated and talented employees of FMFCU,” commented Unangst. “It is because of their exceptional hard work this award is even possible.”

Unangst is a graduate of Penn State University and was a decorated Captain in the U.S. Army.

Brookhaven starts chain’s area expansion BROOKHAVEN >>

Firehouse Subs recently opened a new location at 4824 Edgmont Ave., under the ownership of local entrepreneur Mark Lohkamp. Founded by former firefighting brothers, the new Brookhaven restaurant décor reflects the founding family’s decades of fire and police service. It boasts a custom, hand-painted mural that depicts Brookhaven Fire Company’s two newest fire trucks, alongside firemen and Benjamin Franklin, who founded the first fire company in Philadelphia, dressed in Philadelphia’s five major sports team’s — including the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Union, Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles, all in front of the Brookhaven 911 Memorial. Local firefighter memorabilia is also displayed.

This is the first restaurant for Lohkamp, who signed a multiunit franchise agreement to develop six restaurants in the Northeast. “I chose to join the Firehouse Subs family because I realized how truly unique their restaurants are,” said Lohkamp. “With 18 years in the restaurant industry, I connected immediately to the entire experience – from the friendly atmosphere and quality product, to the brand’s outstanding commitment to serving the local community. I couldn’t ask for a better place to open our first restaurant than the town of Brookhaven, or a more perfect brand to invest with and grow.”
