100 Years Ago – 1917:
Business and professional men, who have rented rooms in the new Crozer Building, Fifth and Market streets, Chester, are moving into their new quarters in large numbers. Within another week the offices will be largely occupied. The Delaware County Trust Co., which will occupy the first floor, will not move in until Labor Day. Edward C. Hickory, druggist, will conduct the cigar and magazine stand in the lobby. A barber shop is to be installed in the basement.
75 Years Ago – 1942:
Chester’s selective boards have not yet determined the status of married men. Pending further study of the new orders handed down at Harrisburg, the secretaries of the city’s three boards could make no comment, leaving scores of married men who have been ordered to report for induction next week in a quandary. These men received their orders last week to report, and when President Roosevelt signed the bill deferring married men on Tuesday, they felt they would automatically be eliminated from service.
50 Years Ago – 1967:
The Federation of Telephone Workers of Pennsylvania has set strike machinery in motion in a dispute with Bell Telephone Co. over a new electronic switching system office in Germantown. I.C. Glendenning, president of the 11,000-member union, said the disagreement is over pay for a proposed new job classification from the company, paying office maintenance people at $29 a week less than current rates. He said the current maximum for the maintenance work is $158.50.
25 Years Ago – 1992:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Raphael will help kick off the anniversary celebration of the Blockbuster Video store in the Dutton Mill Shopping Center, Aston, on July 11. Raphael will arrive by helicopter at noon in the shopping center parking lot. There will also be free prizes, balloons and a drawing for a mountain bike.
10 Years Ago – 2007:
The congregation of Ridley Park Presbyterian Church welcomed back six members of the church who for the second year traveled to Mississippi to volunteer in Gulf coastal areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The church members assisted in rebuilding efforts in an area still reeling from the impact of the hurricane two years ago. Members going to Mississippi included Michele Cooper, Eileen Cooper, Bonnie McCormick, Rita Curtius and Al Curtius.
