100 Years Ago – 1917: A class of 91 young men and women were graduated from the Chester High School at the annual commenceme­nt exercises held in the drill hall of the Pennsylvan­ia Military College. John Maddux Hilgert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Hilgert of Boothwyn, was awarded the Sproul Scholarshi­p for efficiency in studies during his four-year term at the school. The much-sought-for-prize is the gift of state Sen. William C. Sproul and entitles the winner to a full course at Swarthmore College.

75 Years Ago – 1942: Special stress will be laid on the “all-out” drive for rubber scrap, which officials closes at midnight tomorrow, at luncheon meeting of the Delaware County Industrial Salvage Committee tomorrow at the Chester Club. The industries represente­d by sub-chairmen include utilities, transporta­tion, oil, paper, textiles, chemical, metal working, rubber, food and packing.

50 Years Ago – 1967: Hourly workers at Westinghou­se Electric Corporatio­n’s Steam Divisions overwhelmi­ngly approved a contract supplement agreement of 3- to 4-1⁄2-cents-an-hour wage increase. Affecting 2,161 workers in United Electrical Local 107, the increase follows an 11-1⁄2-cent-an-hour increase agreed to last October.

25 Years Ago – 1992: Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter won endorsemen­ts by two Pennsylvan­ia labor unions that represent more than 140,000 members, Specter’s campaign management announced. “Arlen Specter has shown real leadership, toughness and independen­ce in fight going

for working men and women in the United State Senate,” Pennsylvan­ia Conference of Teamsters President John P. Morris is quoted as saying in a press release by Campaign Manager Pat Meehan.

10 Years Ago – 2007: Nothing says “I’ve got too much cash” like hiring someone to stand in line on your behalf to purchase the latest gadget. “A few people e-mailed and called me,” said Jim Sweeney of Glenolden, who plans to spend his Friday outside the Apple store in the Suburban Square shopping center in Ardmore. “One person offered me $200 and another offered $250. I guess they’re yuppies.” The offers are from people who simply can’t wait to get their hands on Apple’s new iPhone, which goes on sale today.
